I was a little concerned about using this pad on a smaller high school player, and I'm not sure they're "approved" for use at that level. My son, who just turned 14 at the start of the school year, is on the younger side for ninth grade. He's 5'4 and 95 pounds, and he's a Z receiver and CB. Varsity Small pads were provided for players with shoulders measuring 16" to 18". He's 15" tall and 17" wide. He couldn't raise his hands high enough with his arms extended. The old Varsity small pads were too wide to allow for arm extension. I spoke with Xenith and was confident that the quality of these youth-sized pads would protect my player. The question is whether to put a player in an ill-fitting larger "approved" set of pads or a properly sized pad. I'm more concerned about the ill-health of the people around me. Using larger pads increases the risk of injury simply because they aren't properly fitted. I believe the Xenith youth FLITE Large size shoulder pads are better protecting him because the pads' fit across his AC joint and pad position are optimized for his size and build. He rated the improvement as a "ten" on a scale of one to ten. 10 scale. He also mentioned how much lighter they are. For extra protection, we'll definitely switch his backplate to this pad.
Excellent shoulder pads that are not too heavy. They're extremely comfortable to wear and protect everything they're supposed to protect, and they come down over the chest and into the mid-back for added protection. They were a perfect fit for my son.
These pads appeared to be quite small at first glance, especially in comparison to the ones we purchased for our son's first season. They seemed to fit well and provide more protection than our original Champros after we put them on. The dimensions can be deceiving. Because my son was smaller, I had to order based on what I saw at Dicks Sporting Goods six months prior. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase, which I had been anticipating for several months.
These were a big hit with my child. In practice, he said he didn't feel as if he had anything on (he felt liberated). They were easy to put on and take off (unlike his previous set, which nearly decapitated him every time he put them on). A fantastic purchase!.
My son spent half of the season wearing rented pads, which limited his arm movement. When he changed to these pads, he said they were 100% better than his previous pads. They appeared to be more solidly built as well. Because he was more confident with the Xenith shoulder pads, his game improved.
I'd like a few more holes in the straps so that I can tighten them up. We made it ourselves. They're light, so he can catch and throw well above his head.
She has some sensory issues, and these are sufficiently protective while remaining lightweight, and she is not bothered by them in the same way that she has been by other brands. I would strongly suggest it.
I prefer a lower profile lighter pad and play at a high school level, so size charts only indicate what is recommended. I ordered a medium and they fit perfectly; however, I wish I had ordered a small instead. Super light, low-profile, and extremely comfortable. I would recommend it, and as I previously stated, the size you choose is merely a matter of personal preference.
