Questions & Answers

Do you have a sheath for this knife?

Yes. It's accompanied by their excellent safe-keeping system. Sheath has been removed.

I'm unable to remove this knife from its sheath. Is there a reason for this?

For these sheathes, a simple tip is to grip the handle as if you were wielding the knife and pull the sheathe out with your thumb.

Is there a clip on the back of the sheath? The back is never shown in any of the photos. Thanks. ?

No, there isn't a "clip" on the back of the card. The belt loop does, however, have a snap on the backside. This eliminates the need to remove your belt, thread it through the belt loop, and then rethread your belt in your pants to put the sheath on and off. The snap is a good, heavy-duty snap with a secure snap. I hope this has been of assistance.

Is it possible to make a spark with flint from the spine of this product in an emergency?

I had no need to remove any coating because I struck sparks with mine.

Paid $38

For $40, you get a 6" knife with a good sheath that will serve you well as a general-purpose "jack of all trades, master of none" working knife. It's a good knife with a sheath that's very useful. Yes, I wish they were still saber rather than hallow ground. A weak grind is less expensive to produce and less effective. Buck has been doing it successfully with their "hunting" knives for a long time. Various steels and heat treatments are used. br>I only had to pay under $40! I purchased two of these. Both of them are faultless. edge; angle of grind; sheath. I re- I taped the stitched connection of the sheath from nylon to plastic and profiled the edge to 20 degrees per side. I wrap the handle in black hockey tape because Cold Steel rubber grips will definitely chew on your bare hands over time. The sheath will tear at this point. I pull the sheath's belt loop to its highest point. re- Tape around the sheath as well as the Chicago screws. On both "mods," use electrical tape first, then hockey tape for aesthetics. As with my other SRKs, this "system" is now bulletproof and will last for decades. IT IS NOT A $300 BUSHCRAFT KNIFE! br>br> You "test" or "beat" the tip to see if it will break - doh! Re- It has a profile! Yes, it's a SRK (surval rescue knife), and it'll do the job. But, in today's market, what can you reasonably expect for $40? Is it possible that ELMAX is a thief? br>I have the Carbon V (US and Japan), San Mai, Aus 8, and CPM 3V versions of this knife. It's a fantastic concept. These versions are still available online, with the 3v version costing around $160 if purchased in a set of four. br>br>For $20, you can get a Cold Steel GI Tanto and beat the crap out of it. I re- Re-profile the "Tanto" edge to a belly and re-profile the "Tanto" edge to a belly. sharpen. It's a great knife, but it doesn't come close to the fit and finish of this one. br>For $35, you can get the Ontario SP- 1075 steel is the new standard. For about $11, cut the top rubber/Kraton thumb guard off and put it in a black leather sheath (7" Kabar or OKC); The total cost was $46. Take a swing at it and see if you can break it. Bend it, it's doubtful, but maybe it'll work; shattered – NO? Abuse has the potential to destroy any knife! br>On fleebay, I found a Glock 78 for $30. Re- It must have a profile edge in order to slice; it is indestructible. The back of the 81 is designed to look like a saw. br>Spend $120 on an Esee 6 that comes with a lifetime warranty. Alternatively, a Busse can be had for $300. br>br>To begin, purchase an Old Hickory 7" butcher knife for $16, as well as a Kabar or OKC leather sheath. $11; Alternatively, for $20, you can get the new 5" version and put it in a Kabar 5 1/4" sheath. You're ready to go if you use hockey tape and palm swell on the handles. br>br>If this knife is what YOU want at this price, I would not hesitate to recommend it. With the proviso that this is now holy ground, so proceed with caution.

I was taken aback and disappointed
3/5

Sharp as a razor. The sheath, as well as the fit and finish, are excellent. br>However, what good is all of this if your blade is damaged by a simple batonning? Moreover, NO! A tree was not felled by me. I had a piece of bamboo that was completely dry.

SRK from Cold Steel in SK- 5br>br>I've been a Cold Steel fan for a long time, and I even have an original Voyager tanto from Japan that is still in good condition. br>br>I'm not a big fan of their budget knives, but the SRK is a great deal. SK- 5 steel is roughly equivalent to 1075 steel, which, while not as good as 1095, is still a good steel. This is not a super steel like CPM3V or S35VN, and the price reflects that. I'm a steel snob myself, but this steel will suffice for its intended use. br>br>The knife is of good quality. The blade was razor sharp right out of the box, with an even grind and a sharpening choil. The rubber overmold grip on the handle is very comfortable, and it provides a lot of traction. 550 paracord can easily be threaded through the lanyard hole. br>br>I despise any fix blade that comes with a shoddy sheath. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Secure Ex sheath is actually quite good. Yes, it's made of plastic, but it's a hard plastic that retains its shape well. The knife will remain secure even if the nylon belt attachment is removed. br>br>For less than $35, this is an incredible deal.

I didn't care for it as soon as I took it out of the sheath
3/5

The handle is too small, I don't like the grind, the coating stinks, and it's a fighting knife, not a survival knife. I did my research and thought everything was fine. I then took it in my hands. br>It might be useful for some people, but I already have ventilation knives. Plus, SK- 5 steel? What the hell was I thinking about? I'd like 440C or possibly AUS8. br>I'm paying the freight on this return because I made a mistake.

Knife with a lot of potential and a good price
5/5

This knife was purchased to be included in a vehicle emergency kit that I am putting together. I put it through the same battery of basic field tests that I do with most of my outdoor belt knives, and it passed with flying colors. I batoned and processed wrist-diameter wood into kindling, feathered sticks, processed cedar bark for tinder with the spine, and built a fire; surprisingly, the coated spine will throw sparks from a ferro rod; It doesn't produce as many sparks as my Garberg, but it's enough to start a fire. I cut down and delimbed small saplings, then carved some basic notches into a try stick. It stood up to the tougher tests and performed admirably in the more delicate knife tests. This knife was less than $35 when I bought it, and it's a great deal at that price. I would have bought another one if I didn't already have a drawer full of knives that are better suited to specific tasks, as I believe it would make a good all-around field knife. It's almost too good to let it sit in a bag in my truck, but I have to remind myself that it cost less than most of my EDC folders. I won't cry if it is stolen from my truck, and it gives me peace of mind knowing that when I am away from home, I have a capable, life-sustaining tool at my disposal.

I like it because it's a great design at a reasonable price
5/5

It appears to be capable of doing everything I need it to do as a side knife in the desert here in New Mexico, and at a very reasonable price; the edge was very nice when I received it, with only a small burr in a couple of spots. The burr vanished after I ran it along the edge of an oak board a few times. So, in thirty seconds, your hair will be popping sharply. I've never had to baton one of my side knives, and I'm not planning on stabbing a car hood any time soon. As a result, this blade geometry is ideal for my requirements. Cutting and slicing are two techniques for preparing food. My sheath fits perfectly, and the edge of the blade does not rub against it. There is no rattling and the fit is perfect. My QC seems to be very good. At almost the same price as my Boker "Giant Bowie" (which is far from "giant"), this Cold Steel is a much better knife, and it should last much longer. So, to sum up: Use it as a knife; it will outlast you. Purchase a Trailmaster and a Mora for larger and smaller tasks, respectively.
