I just got a Lewmar Pro 700 from Amazon to replace the one that was on my Sea Hunt 234 LE. I don't know how old the original windlass was because I bought the boat with it last year. My boat is a 2014 model, so it's no more than six years old. The first unit had a problem with water in the gearbox, which caused severe corrosion to the gears and bearings, and the unit eventually stopped working. At some point, the gear case gasket must have failed. I'm not sure how or why that happened, but it didn't sit well with me. br>br>The replacement is functional, and as long as it doesn't leak, I'm happy with it. The only way to find out is to wait. br>br>For the Gypsy cones, one design I have is the friction lock. The friction nut should be torqued down tight, according to the manual. I don't believe it should be torqued all the way because if there is any binding, Gypsy will not turn. The anchor really slams into place once it enters the bow roller and sets into place, even though I am very careful to always motor up to the anchor when retrieving and not to haul the boat up to the anchor with the windlass. The gears in the windlass are put under a lot of stress as a result of this. I've tried timing the switch release to prevent the anchor from slamming home, but it's difficult, if not impossible. br>br>As a result, I've experimented with different torque settings on the Gypsy in order to keep it tight enough to handle normal retrieval while allowing it to slip as needed to avoid stress on the unit when the anchor sets in the bow roller. I inquired about this with the factory, but they were unable to provide any assistance. br>br>I would advise anyone purchasing this windlass to pay close attention to how tight the Gypsy cone nut is torqued and that the cones are properly greased. br>br>Aside from that, the windlass is functional and attractive. I'll give this windlass a 5 star rating if I can find the sweet spot for the Gypsy cone nut torque and the gearbox stays dry. The seller was pleasant to deal with. The product was delivered on time and in the condition that it had been described.
The Lewmar Proseries 700 windlass is both powerful and compact, as well as well-made. This prevents the rope and chain rode from binding and slipping. Because I have a 32-foot cabin cruiser, the compact design helps me save bow space.
