More information on positioning would be helpful. They are extremely effective. Make sure it's in the right place the first time; repositioning isn't a good idea. My mainsail and furling genoa jib both have them installed. br>I just guessed where the best places to mount them would be. It would be helpful if you could offer some placement suggestions. It would be nice if there was a little less guesswork involved as an intermediate sailor. br>They're simple to put together and appear to stay put. (I did clean the sail surface before gluing them on, which I would strongly advise. ).
Davis has created a number of common sailor-related items, including this one. The tells are generously long for jib or mainsail, and the round stick discs are adequate in size and function. If your sail is dirty, clean it with a soft rag and rubbing alcohol before putting it on.
Placed on both sides of the main and jib. The flow of air across the sails is easily visible. The wind direction is also indicated on the standing rigging. On every level, it's simple but effective.
The telltales are exactly what you're looking for, and they fit into slits in an adhesive disc in a simple, clever, and secure manner. The only issue is that the "slippery" backing card used to hold the discs is either too slippery or delaminates too easily. The first layer of the backing came off on several of the discs and was impossible to remove. I wasn't inconvenienced because there were far more discs than I needed (I believe there were 12).
tales. Davis is best known for its weather stations, but they also manufacture sailing equipment. Davis Air Force Base is located in Davis, California. In the world of tell-tale signs, Flow Tels are the gold standard. In the world of sailboat racing (at least in the small Olympic classes), there are some interesting stories. They're tough, and the stickers stick like crazy. The colors are also not faded. As a sail trimming aid, you attach them to the leech and body of your main and the luff and body of your jib. They've never let me down on either my softwater Club 420 sailboat or my hardwater DN iceboat sails.
These were installed on the mainsail of my Force 5. The telltales are about 1/2" wide and 9 inches long. The length is 5 inches. The stickers adhere well to the material and can be peeled off and repositioned as needed. It is highly recommended.
The tell- The stories are fine, but the sticky-ups are a different story. The backing on backed patches will not come off. For some of the patches, I taped the ribbons on, and Davis is sending me new patches. I've had good luck with other Davis products.
I'm not sure why I waited so long to put these on my sails. I have a 14' sloop rigged dinghy that I'm trying to learn to sail solo in.
