It works! To activate the compass needles, you must first open it and then pull the lever up. When it's closed, it's "locked" to keep it safe.

This was a gift for my father, so I bought it. When it arrived, I was overjoyed, but when I opened it, I discovered something more akin to a children's toy. The compass does not move, and the quality is, in my opinion, quite poor. That's not something I'd give to my father!.
