Timothy- For adult cavies, based is the best option. alfalfa- For juveniles, a base is the best option. br>However, these are shipped in brittle plastic bags with no padding inside the shipping box. One had shattered open, spilling pellets that were falling out of the box that was barely holding together. The others had been squished to a pulp. This is a VERY REGULAR PROBLEM.
1- Pellets are FRAGILE, so they need to be cushioned. If they are jostled, they will become "fines," which are WASTE. Fines are inedible to cavies (as well as rabbits). (Imagine using a tweezer to pick up granulated sugar. ) )
2- In cold weather, softer plastics would not burst as easily as cellophane-based plastics. Currently, the brittle type is in use.
3- The weight of the contents of the boxes is excessive. Put no more than 40 or 50 pounds on your body. Because it's more likely to be dropped and broken, put a lot of pellets in a single box. After all, most people prefer to carry 20 or 30 pounds. than 40 or 50, into their homes. br>Overall, this is a good product, and the cavies seem to enjoy it, but poor packaging and handling can result in a lot of waste.
PROS:
- There are no seeds or fruits that can cause tooth decay or diabetes, respectively. br>- My four pigs, who range in age from three months to four years, all enjoy it. br>- supplants vitamin deficiencies in their dietbr>- a delicious TREAT to add variety to their dietbr>br>CONS:
- Not as good as Oxbow, and there are a lot of ingredients I'm unfamiliar with. br>- calorie dense (only feed your guinea pig) contains sugar, which in high amounts can lead to diabetes (again, with the amount in this food, moderation can prevent this).
I can't speak to the flavor or freshness of this product, but I can confirm that it was consumed by my guinea pigs. My family has three guinea pigs, and they all ate it fine; I might buy it again, but I doubt I'd repurchase because my guinea pigs' poos smelled the day after the first feed (of this product). odd. My seven-year-old son was able to detect a difference in the smell of their feces. I clean their cage on a daily basis and scrub it once a week, so there is usually no odor in there. It wasn't the worst odor, but it wasn't one that lingered. It had just the right amount of strange odor to make you believe you were insane. Until the smell is mentioned by others, and you realize you're not crazy; you've simply changed the guineas' food, which has a different odor.
To keep my cuy healthy, my veterinarian prescribed Timothy pellets and hay. My pigs would go to the bathroom in their food bowl and waste the pellets if I bought the oxbow brand, which is significantly more expensive. Instead, I tried this, and they seem to like it better, despite the fact that it contains alfalfa meal. I suppose it's preferable to going on a hunger strike, but at the very least it's free of the extra junk that other foods contain that is harmful to your cavies.
My piggies seem to prefer this brand/variety of food over the other brands and types of food I've purchased. They dislike the extras that come with other brands (seeds, vegetables, and so on). They eat a lot of fresh food every day, so I believe they only want the straight pellets for these. The pellets are well-formed, and unlike other brands, the bottom of the bag was not clogged with dust.
For about a year, we fed our guinea pigs the same food that the pet store gave them, which was the most expensive brand available. We were wasting uneaten pellets after adding less to the bowl for four guinea pigs because they seemed to take it like medicine. br>br>The first time I poured this new stuff into their bowl, they started popcorning and squealing their heads off. Not only do they eat it all (we make sure they don't run out and keep it filled), but they've also started moving their bowl across the pen, under their blanket, so they can keep eating it. They literally sat with their faces in the bowl. They turn the bowl over and dump the pellets out to keep me from moving it back. We had a few occasions where they surprised us by eating their pellets faster than we expected (and hiding their bowl), and it took a while before we found the right amount to provide. They went through this stuff twice as fast with virtually no waste, and it's still far cheaper than what we fed them before. br>br>We had a few occasions where they surprised us by eating their pellets faster than we expected (and hiding their bowl), and it took a while before we found the right amount to provide. So far, I haven't been able to locate one. The nutrition is essentially the same in both cases. For some of the vitamins listed, the more expensive version may have slightly more, but it may also have less. br>br>I'm assuming it's a treat if it's eagerly consumed. Some catch, such as an unhealthy ingredient they shouldn't consume in excess, could explain why they crave the cheap stuff so much that they keep pushing their bowl into their bed to avoid having to stop eating it. br>br>I haven't been able to locate it yet.
Excellent quality, made in the United States (at least at the time of this review), and with no extras. Years ago, at one of our regular checkups, the vet informed us that the rabbit was gaining weight and that we should wean her off Alpha Alpha products and keep her as simple as possible. We switched to this (only rabbit type) and continue to use it to this day. We did the same thing with our Guinea Pig, and she still enjoys the diet. We supplement the pellets with fresh vegetables once a day, as well as timothy hay on a daily basis.
