I'm not sure what the dimensions are, but I wouldn't recommend buying these online; I've bought them before and they always burn out in a matter of days. When I buy them at the pet store, I never have this problem.
It's made of red glass. "No," I'd say, because it gets quite hot, and you'd still have to put it behind a wire mesh to keep a bird from getting burned.
Over the years, I've dropped a few of these. Although the bulb does not shatter, the filament is likely to be damaged, and the bulb will cease to function.
It shouldn't be left on all the time, but if it is, it can cause harm over time if it is.

br>It doesn't appear to be, and the ones I got from another brand have been putting out a lot more heat and haven't burned out in less than 5 months. br>br>Save your money and get one from a different brand; this one's quality is terrible.
I originally bought two of these (one as a backup) for my 10-gallon tank, which was home to my baby ball python. The first bulb worked fine for about a week until it suddenly burned out, and when I removed it and replaced it with the second one, it made a small dinging noise when I shook it. I assumed it was just a bad bulb at first, so I made do with the other one until my ceramic heat emitter arrived. Within 24 hours, the second bulb blew, scattering glass shards all over the place. I'm not sure what the problem is, but these are only good for a short period of time and are not suitable for long-term use.
Flukers has been the best brand so far. They last for months, maintain a consistent temperature, and I trust the brand. 40 watts, 60 watts, and 75 watts have all been used. It is, without a doubt, my most beloved brand.
With a thermostatic control, I used it in my doghouse. I had it set to 65 degrees and it worked fine; however, as the weather has gotten colder, I've increased the temperature to 70 degrees, but it still hovers around 65 degrees. Next, I'm going to try a 65w.
So far, the bulbs haven't burned out. I use them to keep my guinea fowl keets warm at night. I'm very pleased with them and strongly advise you to buy them. They arrived in a padded paper envelope, which made me suspicious. They arrived undamaged, so the service was excellent. That is my point of view on the matter.
This red is more translucent (and thus brighter) than I expected for use as a night bulb, especially when compared to low wattage blue'moonlight' bulbs. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was far too bright for my tastes in a 20 and 30 gallon enclosure, both in terms of ambient room light and the amount of light that illuminated the tank. However, this issue was easily solved with the use of a light dimmer, so I'm satisfied overall.
This light bulb is never messed with because it sits untouched above the reptile cage.
