What do you have to do to clean/replace the inside material? Is there a better cleaner than the one that sits on the back of the aquarium?

Remove the plug, close the valve levers, disengage the locking lever, and pull the hoses upwards until they are free of the filter housing. Clean the media or replace any media that needs to be replaced. Assemble the pieces in the opposite order.

Is there a set of hoses included? I'm aware that it contains media, but what about hoses?

Yes, everything you'll need to get started is included. I discovered that I needed to purchase additional bio media for my purposes, but it comes with everything you'll need to get started.

Is it possible for plants to thrive with this filter, or is it too strong?

I have a variety of plants in my 75g aquarium and have had no problems; the Cryptocoryne Undulata is well-moving thanks to the outflow from the 407 canister filter. You can reduce the amount of gallons filtered per hour if necessary by adjusting the flow.

The new 07 fluval series has a lot of improvements
5/5

I make a living by maintaining aquariums. I've been using Fluval canister filters for over 20 years, ever since the 03 series was introduced. Right now, I think I have about 25 different generations and sizes running. They've had some issues in previous generations, but they're getting better all the time and are simple to set up, maintain, and diagnose. br>br>I just installed this one to replace a model (404) that was ten years old and making a lot of noise, which my client was complaining about. We decided to upgrade due to the age of the filter and improvements of a model that is three generations newer, rather than replacing the impeller, shaft, and impeller cover, which would have probably helped. br>br>On the Fluval page, there's a lot of marketing fluff about what this generation's new features are. However, if you're considering upgrading, here are some of the most noticeable benefits.

- They strengthened the bottom corners of the canister, and they improved the aquastop valve opening mechanism (which otherwise appears to be unchanged).

- The impeller cover appears to be the same as the 06 series (which was the best improvement over the old 04/05 series, which was notorious for breaking tabs). The new media basket pull out is convenient because it allows all of the baskets to be removed and replaced at the same time.

- The filter is noticeably quieter than previous models; it's very quiet, but not completely silent. I was hoping that with this new generation, they would switch to DC operation, as that appears to be the direction most aquarium return pumps are taking. br>br>Overall, I think this is a good upgrade from the 05 and below series, but if you already own an 06 series, you won't get much out of the new model. br>br>If you're setting up a new tank and don't already have a filter, this is a great option; as previously stated, these filters have a long history, and each generation has improved their power, reliability, ease of maintenance, and quietness. These or the Fluval FX series are my go-to filters when I'm installing a canister filter for a client's aquarium. br>br>In the future, if I notice any issues with this new 07 series, I will update my review.

I've never come across a better filter
5/5

If you don't do what I did, you'll be fine. After our Aquaclear became too noisy for our office tank, I purchased this. We tried everything we could to keep the 29gallon clear, but nothing seemed to work. I purchased the 207, and the tank was crystal clear within a few hours. The fish enjoy playing in the current now that a spray bar has been added. I don't even realize the filter is on because it is so quiet. butbr>br>*** Please read before proceeding. Important***
If you're switching from a cycled filter to a canister, make sure you either keep the other filter running for at least a month while using the canister, or take the media from the old filter and put it in the canister. If you don't do this, the tank cycle will restart, which I found out the hard way. Within a week, my fish began to act strangely. The first sign that my zebra danios were no longer pigs was their running around my fish tank. Then I noticed that one of the rummynoses and danios had died. The other danios appeared sick, with red, flaring gills. My danios were supposed to be bulletproof because I bought them to cycle my tank, but they couldn't handle the stress of losing beneficial bacteria. Just a word of caution.

Changes to the design of 407 are fantastic! After five years of continuous use, I'm replacing a Fluval 305
5/5

I have a 55 gallon tank that is shaped like a Trivial Pursuit puzzle piece. br>I looked at videos of the 407 and the upgrades, but I didn't think it would be a big deal. I was completely wrong. In every way, the 407 is the superior design. br>Primer - This is the first thing you should learn. It's a lot easier to grab and move the lever this way. To begin the priming, you had to make 5 movements. It would take 20 minutes for the older one to move. It takes about 45 movements on average to get the air out and the machine to work. It was difficult to get to it because it was under the stand and against a wall, and priming it was a chore. br>Hose Connection - OMG! This is the most exciting aspect of the new design! The lever that secures it to the filter's top actually works and is incredibly simple to operate. The process of adjusting the flow hasn't changed much. The locking, on the other hand, is significantly improved. Much improved. BETTER than that! Sometimes the old one would appear after you had locked it. This is not the case. br>Impeller Protective Cover - They redesigned the impeller cover and removed the obnoxious clear algae magnet from the gasket. There is now only one tab, rather than two, making it easier to remove and replace. br>Media Tray - This is a placeholder page for Media Tray, which means this page has been automatically For the trays, there is a handle! It was very simple to separate them. When you pry the other media trays apart, the media flings all over the place. br>Filter noise - The impeller could be heard running on the older one. until it started making a noise and stopped cycling. The air pump muffles any noise made by the filter, so it makes almost no noise at all. AMAZING! br>This is the most effective filter I've come across. It's powerful, quiet, and simple to clean, and the new design is well-considered and effective. Fluval did a fantastic job! Thank you, according to my fish! Not that I'm fluent in the language of fish. I also don't communicate with them. Not all of the time, to be sure.
