The price for four of these dual sponge filters is hard to beat. Because I enjoy having two sponges, I clean them alternately, leaving beneficial bacteria on one sponge to help prevent ammonia spikes. I had to adjust the airflow a little by gripping the upright tube tightly and twisting it until the bubbles were distributed evenly. Some have very little airflow or produce larger bubbles right out of the factory. These can be very quiet and have great flow if the notch inside is oriented correctly.

I also use them as a starting point for new ideas. My canister has filters, as well as HOB filters. For polishing, I even have some attached to the intake of my powerheads. Yes, the sponges are fine, but this is a good thing because it keeps your water clear. It's as simple as squeezing it out in some tank water once a week. Because the flow is much higher, I purchased large course sponges and cut them to fit these to replace the fine sponges on my canister filters. In all of my tanks, I have a large number of fish, and I'm the world's worst overfeeder, but Despite the fact that these filters require very little maintenance, they still manage to keep the water crystal clear.

I'm overjoyed that I got these little guys because they're fantastic. My betta, mollie, and guppy tanks all had these. I do have some recommendations for those considering purchasing these. br>br>
NOTE:
- Because these sponges are denser, they will struggle if you use an air pump that is too big for your tank.
- They collect more because of their density. You may need to rinse them more frequently as a result of this.
- If your bubbles aren't coming up uniformly, or are gurgling, it's time to rinse them. br>br>**You should always rinse your sponges with tank water, and I recommend doing so when you change the water. Because I use buckets, I remove the sponges before emptying the buckets: Rinse, shake, and squeeze them into that bucket before replacing them. This keeps your BB (beneficial bacteria) in your sponge and prevents heavy metals and other contaminants (from the tap) from getting into your sponge. You'll be appreciated by your fish and plants. You'll also save water and avoid unnecessary trips to the sink.

I enjoyed these so much that I purchased a second set! It's a great deal, and it's well worth the money! Filters are extremely effective. The fact that the foam intakes can be angled away from the tank's sides is particularly appealing to me. The foam intakes are simple to remove and clean. I have one in a 29 gallon tank with an external power filter for biological filtration only. br>I use them on my five and ten gallon grow out tanks. I even have one in a 2 1/2 gallon tank that I use for the initial hatching of eggs.

For my betta, it appears to be gentle. I'm a little concerned that he might get stuck in the outflow tube, so I'll keep an eye on him.
Edit: A tetra whisper10 was given to me. To reduce the flow, I attached a flow regulator. (Couldn't lower it too low or the heater would stop working. ) ) I taped the output to a flat leaf on a plant in my tank so that the betta wouldn't be tempted to stick his head in the opening. Betta is a big fan of the gentle sway. He spent his first night in the tank sleeping with the bubbles.

As a supplement to regular filtration, this item is ideal for all tanks. Each of my three tanks, ranging in size from 20 to 54 gallons, has one. They are simple to conceal, with only the bubbles and a small portion of the pump visible. Squeezing and cleaning sponges is a breeze. a fantastic deal.

I have two of these filters, one at each end of my 20 gallon betta tank, and they don't seem to mind at all. They are much smaller than the old school sponge filter, but I can clearly see they push more water through the filter and help provide a small current to circulate the water. Yes, you can have more than one betta in the same tank, it's known as a sorority, look it up; )br>br>As a bonus, my child destroyed his tank, which required me to completely re-start it, bacteria and all. Because each filter has two sponges, I was able to transfer a sponge from my old tank to the new one to help jumpstart the bacteria.

These, along with battery-powered air pumps, were purchased as part of my emergency kit for power outages. They're in my tanks with the hob filters just to allow bacteria to grow. If the power goes out, I'll connect them to the battery-operated air pumps, and hopefully my fish will not notice. I still need to get some hand warmer packs in case the power goes out while it's cold outside.
