I use this Mat Remover on my Silky Terrier, who has long hair and is prone to mats and knots. This tool comes with five curved blades and an in-built blade sharpener. There's a tree with branches in the middle of each blade. The blades are meant to slice through the mat, and the "trees" are meant to pull the mat apart as they slice. The inside of the curve is sharp, while the outside is blunt. As a result, the dog's skin never comes into contact with the sharp edge. It must, however, be used with extreme caution. First, I use a dematting comb to gently pull the knot away from the skin as much as possible, allowing the mat remover's curved blades to reach beneath the mat. The difference between the mat remover and the comb is that the comb has teeth rather than blades, and pulling the comb through the mat can be painful. When combing a mat, I always pinch my fingers tightly together next to the skin at the base of the mat to make the pulling less painful. If the mat isn't too bad, a comb might suffice. The mat remover is required if the piece is tightly matted.
The blades on the Mat Remover are smaller. I prefer the Remitting comb over the Safari Mat Remover because it works faster and pulls less hair. Just be careful because it's a razor-sharp object.
Because it works for my Shih Tzu, the Safari Mat Remover should work for your Maltipoo as well. If the mats are large clumps, start by snipping into them with a pair of blunt-tipped scissors to break them up a little. While the mat remover's blades cut through the mat, if you have to pull very hard to cut mats in sensitive areas, your dog will probably not appreciate it. So, after cutting into the matted area with scissors, try to hold the mat's base with your fingers to avoid pulling the skin when pulling the mat remover through the mat. I just received this in the mail today, and after 30 minutes of use, I felt compelled to write a review. I've bought dozens of different brushes for my long-haired cat, and none of them have ever worked without the use of scissors or pain to get the mats out. My cat had no complaints about this brush because it removed all of the mats and excess fur. I've already recommended this brush to three different cat owners. This brush has blown me away.
I took him to the groomer, who informed me that she would either have to shave him or charge me a large sum of money to get them out. She gave me a poodle comb and a slicker brush and told me to try to brush them out on my own at home. After three weeks of unsuccessful attempts to remove the matting, I did some online research and discovered this handy tool that works wonders on labradoodle coats. I used it in conjunction with Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine (also available on Amazon) and noticed a significant reduction in matting. I simply massaged the detangler into the matted areas before combing out the mats with the Safari Mat Remover. His underwear was strewn across the floor in clumps! He blowing off his puppy undercoat was most likely what caused the matting. I'm still working on removing a few more mats, but if you have a dog with a lot of hair and is prone to this problem, this is a must-have.
He's a long-haired cat who prefers to spend his afternoons outside, so he's dusty and matty, and he's not big on grooming. His hair mats easily (he has a thick coat with a thick undercoat), and even with regular grooming, it can become a tangle. I used this on him yesterday and had a couple of mats that needed to be cut out, but I only had to cut them in half, leaving part of the mat in place, and that lifted the rest of the mat right out (so I didn't have to cut his hair all the way to the skin). It can be difficult to get to the other side of the animal in the correct direction at times. The tool has a screw at the end that allows you to reverse the direction of the head / blades, but this must be done with caution because the small blades and picks are in separate compartments. However, the blades' base detaches, allowing you to change the direction of the blades and reassemble them. This is something I've done successfully, but it's a pain to do every time you brush your pet. I'm going to order another mat remover so I can have one for each direction. After noticing matting on my schoodle's feet and muzzle, I attempted to remove it with a comb, which he detested, before cutting the larger ones out. I immediately went online to look for ways to gradually remove the mats without causing him too much pain. I went with this mat remover and the Cowboy magic detangler. He didn't want to be groomed again, but I've never seen him develop mats before, and I hate the idea of him being uncomfortable because they pull his skin. I was able to pick the mat apart with this small mat remover after applying detangler to it. I can angle the blades into his muzzle and onto his delicate feet because they're small enough. He didn't like it, but I was able to hold his skin and work the blades into the mat, starting at the far edge and working my way closer to his skin. I was able to use a steel comb to remove the remaining mat and tangles after the bulk of the mat had been removed. Even though I groom him at least once a week, I was surprised to see him develop these mats. I'll definitely keep a closer eye on him in the future. I think he'll be able to stay snarl-free with this mat remover and the Cowboy magic detangler.
My Shih Tzu, who is one year old, has a long coat that I groom. I tried it out the other day and it was fantastic. I'm glad I bought it because she gets mats easily and this product made them easy to remove. I would recommend it.
