Hi - I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be done. The lid should only be on when you're ready to clean out the waste with it.
Arm and Hammer's Slide cat litter is fantastic! While it's upside down, simply tap the bottom and sides. When wet or clumped, this litter will not stick. It's the only cat litter I've ever used in this box!

He also cleans 6 cats' litter boxes. He was successful in acquiring them! He adores the fact that he is no longer required to scoop and search for items! Simply tip the bin, the poop falls into the drawer, and the bin is emptied! They're a little tall, so they wouldn't fit where some of the other liter boxes did, but we measured ahead of time, so this wasn't a surprise. My only gripe is that I despise all of the cat feces that ends up on my carpets! (However, we've had similar problems in the past).
It's a cinch to have cats because it only takes 30 seconds to do the job once a day. I purchased two for my home, one for my granddaughter's cats, and two for my daughter's cats.
Messy. We essentially paid for a pan because it is of poor quality. The litter box is too small for a cat, and rolling the litter is inconvenient and does not remove all clumps. Plastic is inexpensive, and we're already down to one. Out of 3, there are 5 latches.
When I first tried to clean it, I rolled it as directed, and all of the cat poop fell out onto the floor. It's pointless.
This is such a simple thing to do! We're saving money on litter because there's less work and less mess!.
