Questions & Answers

Do you think it'll fit a 15-pound cat in here?

Yes. It should easily support a 15-pound cat, in my opinion. My two puppies sat on top of it at the same time, weighing a total of 18 pounds. If you're still unsure, check with Modkat to see what they think the top grid's weight limits are. Best wishes to you. This litter box is one of my favorites!

Is it difficult for older cats to keep up?

There are four cats in our household: a vivacious 20-year-old (who can still jump on counters), a couch potato of 13 years, and two young cats (2 and 3 years old). The kittens quickly adjusted to their new surroundings. It is not a problem. The ModKat was never used by the 20-year-old or the 13-year-old, despite the fact that we liked it. Obviously, this is not a strain for the 20-year-old. She was simply adamant about not putting it to use. An old cat, it appears, cannot be taught new tricks.

Is this a bit much for a seven-year-old? Is this a kitten that is eight weeks old?

My 9-week-old kittens were afraid it was too deep (despite the fact that I've seen them jump higher). If they're having trouble adjusting, try putting a box beneath the tarp liner to raise the bottom. Use another box as a stepping stone to encourage them to climb on top of the box. If they're still hesitant, bribe them with a treat. br>I hope this information was useful.

I'm really excited to get my hands on this box. How big is the hole that the cats will use to enter? I have one cat who weighs around 15 pounds. Thx! ?

Modkat is a favorite of ours. My Russian Blue is a year old and weighs ten pounds; their bodies are long, I believe. Once inside, he has no trouble jumping up and maneuvering; the opening is listed as 8 on the Modko website. At its smallest point, it measures 5 inches (9 and 9). 5 inches at its widest point). I believe your cat would be fine - the opening isn't quite a circle, but you can see the shape and read about it on their website. However, I would not recommend this litter box to an elderly cat because it may be difficult for them to jump up and into the opening. Also, for cats who prefer and are accustomed to litter boxes with a top, this is a good litter box. If your cat does not like enclosure-style litter boxes (and instead prefers an open box bottom), an enclosure may not be for them. If you require any further information, please contact me.

There is one major flaw in the design
3/5

If I had to give it a score, I'd give it a three. I'd give it a 5 out of 5 star rating. We've had it for about 4 weeks now, and I believe it's time for an honest assessment. It's a huge hit with our 11-pound cat. I was afraid she wouldn't, and I'd be stuck with a $99 bathroom trash can. But she tried to get into it as soon as I took it out of the Amazon box, even before I could put the litter in it. She can get in and out with ease. Jumping on top and hopping down inside seems natural to her, and it reduces litter tracking to almost nothing, which is good for both me and Kitty. This box will assist you if that is a major issue for you. I also like how the litter container can be removed with a simple lift. When you scoop, the lid on top hinges open, and any litter on top falls back into the box. It also appears to be quite attractive. But there's one thing that worries me. She manages to dig to the bottom corner to pee no matter how much litter I put in it. The "tarp" liner is sewed at the seams, and pee manages to get underneath the tarp and pool there, where the litter can't soak up the icky and clump it up. As a result, every week I have to scrub the bottom of the box and the tarp's bottom. My issue is that for $99, I don't believe that should occur. This would be an ideal litter box if it weren't for that issue. Modkat should be able to change this in the future, in my opinion. The seams of that tarp must be waterproof. Once pee has soaked into the stitching, it's extremely difficult to get it all out. I sent an email to Modkat support about this two weeks ago and have yet to hear back. As a result, the anti- is its strong suit. The flaw in the tarp liner leaks and pools pee under the tarp, which makes litter tracking difficult. br>br>Update Oct 22, 2017br>I'm almost ready to get rid of the tarp and use only the box. I liked the idea of simply lifting out the tarp and dumping the litter, and I believe the tarp should work for a $99 product, but it isn't quite there yet. I emailed ModKat and received a response a few weeks later stating that I wasn't putting enough litter in the box. So I poured half a gallon of urine into the box, and the urine still managed to get under the tarp. I believe Kitty collides with a sown seam in the corner, allowing water to seep through and trickle down beneath the tarp. The tarp begins to stink as well, and no amount of scrubbing will get rid of it. ModKat needs to replace the tarp so that the seams don't leak.

Bucket that has been under-engineered and is therefore expensive
3/5

I am a huge fan of over-the-top Engineered, slick products for which people are willing to pay a premium. However, the longer I have had this product, the less enthusiastic I have become. br>br>First, while I like the look and top entry, I don't think it should cost $100 just for those two items. So, what's the issue here? br>br> First, let's take a look at the liners. Within the first two changes, those were scraped. My 10-week-old kittens would rip these apart in an attempt to bury their waste, causing the liner to become severely distorted - What a full-grown cat would do to them, I can't imagine. Cleaning the liners is also a pain, and they take a long time to dry. They also trap moisture (urine) along the seams, which I believe makes them completely useless. Let's move on to other design elements now. br>br> The scoop, as others have pointed out, is on the outside; why can't this be on the inside in some way? One of the main reasons that any of us wants this box is to reduce the amount of litter on the floor. So, after scooping, the shovel goes outside to allow more litter to fall to the ground? And if someone passing by your house noticed this sleek little box but didn't notice the darn scoop attached to the side, their attention would be drawn back to it. I chose this design because it can be out in the open without looking like a cat box. Thank you, Modkat, for ensuring that this was not mistaken for anything other than a cat box. Let's take a look at the lid. br>br> The lid has holes in it, which allows the litter to fall back into the box. Great. Modkat has designed a handle/hole in the side of the box so that any litter that remains on the lid slides off through the "handle" and onto the floor when the lid is flipped. It's a real pain. Finally, this item requires a slight increase in size. Because he doesn't have enough room to maneuver around and bury his business before jumping out, my cat seems to end up stepping in it. As a result, there are a lot of really unhappy messes. br>br>All right, let's get started. With all of this in mind, I'd opt for something less expensive until they address these issues; I'm a sucker for products that combine design and functionality, but the longer I own this one, the more I realize the functionality is lacking.

I've never purchased a worse litter box
3/5

This litter box is a complete waste of money. It's too small for my cat, and she despises it. My review is being removed by the company on a regular basis, and I'm not sure why Amazon allows it. My review is completely unbiased. I actually bought two of these, one for each of my cats, and they both despised them. They have a nice appearance, but they aren't good litter boxes and don't provide enough space for the cats. I wish there had been more honest reviews for me to read before I wasted my money because they wouldn't let me return mine. I literally threw them away and replaced them with two MUCH less expensive litter boxes that work perfectly and that the cats have no trouble using, unlike these.

It's neat and appealing
5/5

My issue is as follows: In our tiny house, there aren't many places for our two adult cats to use the litter box. The old box was a large, unsightly gray box that was prominently displayed in our white kitchen. It was a complete disaster, and the cats tracked litter all over the floor as a result. The Modkat was more expensive than any other litter box I'd ever bought, but it's turned out to be ideal: it's not too big, so it fits around a corner in the kitchen rather than in the middle. Our two large cats (12 lbs and 17 lbs) don't seem to mind it. It took a few tries to get them to understand what to do with it, but they've both figured it out now (see video for our 12-year-old's first success). Nuke, a senior of a year and a half. It's simple to clean up, and the top-quality materials make it even easier. It is undeniably true that allowing people to enter helps to reduce litter.
