BEWARE OF THE BUYER. While the item is listed on the website as PetSafe Drinkwell Replacement Premium CARBON Filters, the genuine article is only delivered if you order the 3-pack. pack. If you purchase the 12-pack, you will receive You'll get phony filters with a foam core instead of charcoal in your pack. These foam core filters are significantly less effective than charcoal filters, and they are a clear misrepresentation. After using one of these phony filters, the remaining 11 were thrown away.
My fountain began to have foamy water and pink scum buildup after I began using these filters. I installed a new charcoal filter yesterday after cleaning the entire fountain (including the pump) with water and vinegar as the manufacturer recommended. I clean my fountain on a weekly basis. The photos below were taken today (the next day). After 3 days of foaming, I noticed a pink scum build up around the charcoal filter casing/water line, so I decided to try an experiment and remove the charcoal filter completely, and the foaming/pink scum buildup stopped. THE USE OF THIS PRODUCT IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREME I'm throwing the rest away and will no longer use a charcoal filter.
9/9/20 UPDATE The manufacturer's prompt response is greatly appreciated. As requested, I contacted customer service, who was extremely pleasant. After I try out the new filters, I'll update my review. br>br>RECENT UPDATES TO REVIEW: After doing some research, it appears that the problem with charcoal filters is that they remove all of the chlorine from the water, allowing bacteria to grow more rapidly in these fountains. I mean, no chlorine sounds great, but I'm not sure why the original filter that came with the fountain didn't cause me any problems. Unfortunately, it still doesn't help me if these filters cause abnormally rapid bacteria growth, so I'll be returning them, but I wanted to update the star rating on this review. PREVIOUS REVIEW: br>br> To begin, I'd like to point out that the original filter that came with this product did not have this problem, which is why I specifically purchased replacement filters from this company. I'm not sure what's different about these, but the water is foamy and a pink buildup is all over the fountain within a day or two of using a new filter, even after cleaning the entire fountain inside and out as I always do once a week. I'm not sure I want to keep allowing my cats to drink from the fountain because it appears to be extremely dangerous. After five days of use, the photo below was taken. This product is not one I would recommend to anyone.
I'm on my second fountain right now. I had never had any issues with the filters until the last 6 months or so. After switching to a generic brand, I began to notice black residue on the carbon filters. As a result, I reverted to using name-brand filters. These have now surpassed the generic in terms of quality. This filter, as well as the foam filter, must be changed on a weekly basis. Every part of the fountain, including the motor, is covered in thick black gunk. Cleaning takes me about 30 minutes. To clean the gunk out of every part of the fountain, I have to use a small eyelash brush. It's revolting! I'm not sure what they're doing differently with the filters this time. Until the last 6 months or so, I'd never had this issue. Because of the filter issue, I'll never buy another fountain from this brand!.
According to the manufacturers, these filters are made to filter out flavors and odors. Specific contaminants like lead and mercury will not be filtered out. In terms of odors, I believe these are effective. There are two cats in my house. One of them will drink from the fountain, though if I let him, he would also drink from the toilet. One of them refuses to drink from the fountain because of the filters, but he has a history of being a water snob. It's difficult to say whether or not these will work. After a couple of days, I notice visible dirt specks in the fountain. Because the fountain's motor does not appear to draw the dirt into the filter, these filters do not appear to help.
However, after reading about the differences between carbon and charcoal and attempting to understand them, we decided to experiment with the charcoal. Always rinse these before using them, and make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you don't, the water will be contaminated with black dust and other contaminants. I've been amazed at how much more clearly I can hear the water running since cleaning and replacing the filter (to the point where I've thought it was raining or the faucet was on), plus the water looks and has stayed clearer. It's up to the dog whether it tastes better, but it certainly sounds and appears to be cleaner.
When these were discontinued (much to my chagrin), I was forced to buy the entire (non-refillable) unit, but it was a no-brainer when I weighed the hassle, and MESS, of having to refill the filter every week, etc. against simply dropping this new filter in! AND at this price, the convenience of not having to refill is well worth it. br>Just remember to RINSE the new filter under the tap before putting it in the housing, or your drinking water will be tinted with the new charcoal residue. Weekly replacement is what I recommend.
For our cats, my wife purchased a Petsafe Drinkwell fountain. Because the water chamber of our other fountain, which our cats used, is enclosed, we worried that if the power went out at our house while we were at work, the cats would be without water. As a result, we wouldn't have that problem with this fountain. The filters for this fountain are cylinder-shaped with a diameter of about an inch, and they clog up quickly. We decided not to use these filters because my home has a reverse osmosis water system, and the fountain now runs much more smoothly.
