I can't say yes or no to birds because I don't have any house pets.
I've had it in my large wall fountain for three years. So far, no harm has been done! I'm now using it in my outdoor fountain and haven't had any issues with it.
I'd check with your vet. Personally, I would never use a product like this in my dog's pool, but that is purely a personal preference.

We have a fountain that is made of a concrete-like material with fiberglass fibers mixed in. To kill the algae, I used bleach, but the concrete deteriorated as a result. When we had the fountain refurbished, the technician suggested that we use fountec instead. Although it does not prevent the fountain from turning green, it does prevent algae from penetrating the concrete. Now I drain the fountain and use a stream of water to wash the algae away. Fountec is safe for hummingbirds who enjoy playing in the water because it does not cause the fountain material to deteriorate.
br>The product performs admirably and has no adverse effects on wildlife.
I read the description before ordering and it is supposedly safe for birds, but now I am concerned about the toxicity of this product. And I'm stumped as to how to get rid of it, especially since there's a warning about waterway contamination.
Even though the water is topped off every few days, we have a smallish (40 to 50 gallon) decorative pond and pump setup that gets a little wonky in direct sunlight. However, with only a capful of this algecide, the water has remained crystal clear. I'm happy I came across this item.
We are ecstatic to have discovered this item!.
This is some truly heinous behavior. Do not use this in your water feature if you have pets. It's not as good as some of the other products I've tried.
Every year, I was sick of battling algae. We simply want to enjoy our pond and, on hot days, float around in it. We removed the fish and plants, but we can't chlorinate because our pond has an EPDM liner. Since April, when we first opened the pond, this Fountec has performed admirably. There is still no evidence of algae in late June. I'm really happy about it. It's safe to drink from for my cats and birds as well.
We have a large three-tier fountain that is covered in algae almost the entire year; I was so sick of it that I considered ripping it out and filling the hole with dirt. I've tried a number of products, but the fountain only looks marginally better after use. I poured about 1/2 cup of this in, and the algae was gone in two days, the water was clear, and the two frogs in my fountain were still alive; I'll do smaller doses each week, but I'm very pleased with the results thus far.
