If I add 5 drops of this chemical to the powder after testing for free chlorine with the salt and r- , then I’d know if the chemical is what I’m looking for. What is 871?

In fact, yes. As soon as the solution is clear, add five drops of this reagent, swirl, and then drop by drop add the R-containing solution This reagent is called the 0871. Although I'm not sure if you can test the free chlorine before the combined chlorine, I am wondering whether you can.

A bad batch or an incorrect chemical in the bottle can lead to a toxic reaction

The site is not working. I have ordered before and had no problems. It appears that the order I received in April does not work. It is unfortunate. The return period had passed when I tried to do it. When my pool began to look and smell worse each day, I bought a new bottle at the local pool shop to get rid of the problem. One of those showed a high FC, whereas the other showed a 0 with the same water sample from Amazon.

A good replacement for the original bottle to replace the one from my Taylor kit

It works just like the original and is reasonably priced. So, no leaks occur while it is in transit, as it was packed in a bag, then in a box. It is a product I will purchase again at a later date.
