We're disappointed the jaw doesn't open wide enough when you jam it in, nor does it maintain leverage when you open it up. There is a way too easy tendency to let the jaw slip. In order to log, I had to quit, go home, and use my antique bar to roll a huge green pine. I was torn between returning it and repurchasing it, but perhaps it will work for something else one day. Additionally, I have 20 acres with tons of trees that need to be removed. It was disappointing. I imagine it would be difficult to break, given that it appears to be well constructed. There may be a way to file a sharper edge on the jaw so that it does not.
When I bought it, I became mad and made my own that was better than the one I had.
A log gripped in this form would not work. The tip of the hook had to be grinded into a sharper point. The iron used to make the tip was weak, thus breaking it. Using high carbon steel to make my own hook assembly. As of now, it is working fine.
My Peavey is very helpful that I use it a lot on my property to clear fallen trees and cut up the smaller A tree with a diameter of two feet and a length of twenty feet can be rolled with the handle's strength. hook and tip of the pike are all made from solid steel, giving them strong gripping properties. This is the tool I recommend to anybody who wants to work with log files.
I was pleased with the delivery time, however the hook leaves much to be desired. I will have to grind it down as it does not cut into the bark of the log very well you almost have to smack it into the log with a hammer to hold it. As this one has a pointed end, like a rose used for river logging, it would have been better to offer one for land use. Currently on the fence as to whether it's a strong tree or not and have not yet rolled a tree larger than 12" in.
Despite being heavy and firm, the handle was easy to grasp. In spite of this, the wood is extremely rough, so it could use a bit of smothering. Hopefully there is a way to protect it. I will have to get sandpaper and some kind of clear coating. all, I've been looking forward to this for a long time.
As some have complained, the hook is not wide enough, but I can make it work, but my efforts are not particularly powerful.
A little more than 35" of handle is usable (lower back going "OW! I imagine it would be a much better tool if the handle had 49" of useful length (rather than the overall length being 49"). A garden gnome can use this to fit a little firewood - it's the perfect size I don't need a Peavey for the logs I need (which aren't Peavey-sized). I would choose a pole with a longer handle (66" or so, and a wider hook) if I were buying another. It's always better to look back than to forward.
This product really pleased me, the only problem was that it was received missing parts, so I couldn't give it a higher rating. Can be used but will need to purchase or locate a hook so it can be attached. Originally I was going to ship the item back to (from china) for a refund or a replacement, but I actually really like the item. I just wish the missing piece could be sent to me.
