emerald ash bore beetles have damaged a bunch of ash trees, so I need to chainsaw them for wood. It would be cheaper for me to buy a chainsaw and cut them down myself instead of buying them. Several months ago, I noticed that it became increasingly difficult to saw the trees, and we ran into a chain that was bound and some After reading the manual, I sucked it up and kept going. In the end, I realized I had to sharpen or replace the chain pretty quickly because it gets dull pretty fast. Let's be clear, when I said I was a novice, I meant I was too proud to read the manual until disaster strikes. The dealer said I would have to pay about $28 for a new chain. There was going to be a lot to deal with there. I asked how much it would be $10 was all that was charged. After watching a few videos online, I went to the library. It would be cool if there were some tools to make sharpening easier, but they are a bit pricey and I'm cost-conscious. It was for that reason I decided to do it on my own. Having watched the online videos and knowing what I needed to do from the instructions, I was able to sort out the vice and file instructions. The instructions were a bit opaque and had no words. Once you figure out what to do, the symbols on the file make it clear what you should do. When I first sharpened the chain, it took 30 minutes, but every time I sharpened it, it got faster and I only need 5 minutes to do it now. The green link on one of the chains is helpful because you can tell when you have covered all the links. Start sharpening there so you know when you have finished. I am not sure when I will need to replace the files themselves, but as long as it sharpens my chain, I can probably use the initial files immediately. As of today, I had just finished cutting up my fourth tree and I am currently working on my second chain (the first.
It has lines etched on it that you are supposed to align with. There are lines etched into the bar that you need to line up with the etched lines in order to keep the correct The hardest tooth to sharpen is the one with the most damage. Count the strokes you use to make The rest of the teeth can be treated using the same number of strokes. Then file your depth gauge at the same time to the exact depth so your chain is cut to the exact length. The motion is easy to get used to after a few minutes. Also, it fits perfectly into the case I keep with my Stihl MS271, so I will always have it with me. If you aren't sure which file set you need, you should inspect the stamping on the bar of your saw and determine what chain you are using. The most likely answer is (325 or 3/8 in.
It is critical to make sure it comes with the correct round files for your saw chain before you buy it. In spite of what the ads would have you believe, you cannot simply take the pitch at face value. The file sizes can't be changed, and you can't change the rounding. All sharpeners are manufactured to hold only a specific size of file, so a sharpener with a different size of file In all, it is faster than the old school way of sharpening fields when compared with the old school way.
The review I am writing here is warranted for someone who does not often write them. You can quickly and effectively sharpen your chain with this tool. There is no need to file the rakers along with the teeth, as most people do not understand what that means. When you use this tool the first few times it does seem clunky, but after you use it three or four times it becomes obvious why it is the right tool to use. It works great with the chain on the bar using the tailgate of my truck as a bench. It is much more useful if you take the chain off and sharpen it in a vise. I have a 6 inch vise that can handle 4 teeth at a time. There is no doubt that this is a great Please make sure that the chain you purchase is the right size!.
I bought a cheap electric bench grinder but it did not impress me. The other day, I stumbled upon a video from a professional lumberjack on YouTube. A demonstration of how to use it was shown by him. In order to give it a try, I thought it would be good. According to its claims, it works! It is easy to dress the chain as the saw is running. few times you sharpen the chain, you have to work a bit to get it into good shape, but after that, a couple or three strokes every time you get the chain out is all that it needs to perform well. It is easy to carry so that you can stop for a quick chain replacement during the day.
It is an extremely effective tool and is extremely easy Only one YouTube video was watched and I followed the diagrams molded into the tool and it worked the first time I used it. There was a good balance between ergonomics and weight, and it did not feel flimsy as While I only had a partially dull chain, I was impatient and wanted to try it as soon as I took it out of the box. It only took me about ten minutes to sharpen my entire chain, and I think I could easily halve that time with practice. However, the difference was quite evident (see the before and after photo), and with just 3 strokes on each tooth, the blade was as sharp as it had been when I bought it. The idea that you can replace each individual file is a great feature, so I think this will easily last a lifetime. I would definitely recommend getting a stump vise along with this for use in the field, though. Make a mark on the first tooth you sharpen with a Sharpie as well! There are not enough good things to say about this tool.
This product came in two sizes so that I could fit different chains with it. In my chain sharpening efforts, I used all methods possible, As of now, I have only used these twice on three different saws, but so far they seem to be the best option I have It's pretty much impossible to make a mistake with them. It is unclear to me why these things aren't more common, given how simple and consistent they are? Whether the rakers and teeth continue to be filed at an equal rate over several sharpenings will be interesting to see in the long run. A note to make is that there seems to be some flex and pinching if you use the entire area of the file. Also, there are 2 small marks on the aluminum guide that don't appear in the photo. As it stands, you are only supposed to use the file between those two marks (although the directions aren't extremely clear about that). A bit of a pinch was felt on the tooth when you tried to go all the way to the end. It hasn't been a perfect experience with these, but I am still very happy with them.
I am amazed! In order to see how good this sharpener is, I took one of the chains I was about to discard. It is on its fifth day of use and it is still cutting well. Sharpening it every day is a daily ritual for me.
