Questions & Answers

How big is it? I built a cat trap in the same manner, but I'm afraid the raccoon will be too large for it. ?

It depends on the raccoon. In my 1079, I've caught a lot of woodchucks, opossums, squirrels, the occasional bird, and a skunk, but with a current raccoon problem, I've had mixed results. Raccoons had made their way into the attic. I immediately caught a medium-sized one, followed by another a few days later. Unfortunately, the second one flipped the trap over, allowing it to escape by releasing the gravity lock. After that, I wired the trap to the roof framing so it couldn't be moved, and they went after the bait from the outside. They even took the trap's trigger rod out! I recently placed an order for a Havahart 1081 (15x15x42), which arrived on Wednesday. I set it up on Thursday evening and caught a large raccoon the next morning. That new trap was also wired to the roof framing, and the trap and pan's floor was covered with an attic carpet. So the raccoons couldn't get to it, some sardines (in a tin that had been opened just a crack) were placed near the pan, away from the end and sides. When it comes to the "it depends" part, In reality, what size raccoon are you looking for? If it is truly a large one, I believe you will have better luck with a larger trap.

What is the distinction between "Havahart 1079 Live Animal Professional-" and "Havahart 1079 Live Animal Professional-"? One of the styles is: Raccoon, groundhog, opossum, and stray cat are just a few of the creatures that can be found outside your door. ", as well as the number 1089, Havahart?

The only difference is that the 1089 automatically sets the trap or locks the door for the animal you're attempting to catch when you lift the handle. You have to manually set the trap in the 1079, which I purchased. I like being able to get the bait inside and finish everything before I set the door's spring. I don't want my arm to get caught in the bait while I'm trying to set it. You'll also need something to keep the cage stable if you're catching raccoons. A caccoon's ability to roll the cage is quite impressive. Sue

Why did the bait tray fall over, the bait disappeared, and there was no catch?

I've seen a rabbit in the cage a couple of times when the door has been tripped shut. When I go out to get it, it has somehow gotten away from me. Is the door supposed to latch when it's tripped to keep this from happening?

What have you put underneath it during transportation (to avoid bathroom accidents in your vehicle)?

I use a trash bag with newspaper sandwiched between it and the trap. Plastic by itself isn't a good idea because liquid will simply roll off. The trash bag keeps the dirty newspaper from touching the seat while the newspaper absorbs the liquid.

Selected User Reviews For Havahart 1079 Large 1-Door Humane Animal Trap for Raccoons, Cats, Groundhogs, Opossums

1079 has become so cheap that it is potentially dangerous
3/5

I've been buying Havahart traps since I was a kid with holiday and chore money, so having to write this review is extremely disappointing. br>br>If you set it up correctly, the trap works perfectly. If necessary, fine-tune the release plate, or use a sticky bait such as peanut butter on or around the trip plate to ensure that it is triggered. br>br>My issue is that the design has been cheated to the point where I feel compelled to call it dangerous. The amount of blood from the animal that was on the trap this morning must have upset the men who used these traps. The distance between the trapdoor and the cage's side has widened, so I believe this is where the injury occurred. I was definitely in the area where the raccoon could bend and shake the door open. The spring and locking bar eventually popped past the catch due to the animal's laughter. This happened as I was getting ready to leave; 5 minutes later, I would have had a very aggressive raccoon loose in my car, potentially injuring myself and causing a collision. It would have wreaked havoc on the car at the very least. br>br>As a result, I have to say that, in its current shabby state, this trap poses a risk to both the animal and the user. br>br>The final motivator for this review was that every time I tried to contact the company via the contact us or email us links on the site, I was directed to the page I have attached. br>br>I believe the trap could be modified to work, and it is functional if you are trapping a more placid animal, but I can no longer recommend it, at least in its current form. br>br>Recent changes: br>br> I tried once more on April 20th. Cage that was demolished The result was a bloody puddle. Please look at the photos. The hair caught on the cage can even be seen.

The structure is shoddy
3/5

I'm returning this product because it's flimsy and poorly constructed. I have a similar trap from Amazon that was made by a different company and has served me well for several years. This trap has already broken at the top handle, and when one small raccoon got into it, the trigger plate was completely destroyed, and I can no longer use it. I hate leaving such a negative review, but I rely on customer recommendations when I shop on Amazon, and I believe they should be honest and accurate.

On the first night, I caught a cat! My daughter's take on it: I catch stray/feral/lost cats and, if they don't have identification or aren't clipped, I take them to be fixed before releasing them
3/5

This device was extremely effective. On the first night, it caught a kitty. I used some of the cat food that my own finicky feline refused to eat. Setting it up was a breeze. br>NOTE: THIS PAGE HAS BEEN UPDATED. I've only set the trap five times, but I've already caught four cats! br>NEW UPDATES: In the morning, when I went out to check the trap, I discovered a bloody cat inside! I believe it was hurt while attempting to free itself from the trap. I'm at a loss for what to do. I'll take a picture and post it on the internet. br>THIS IS THE THIRD UPDATE: I just can't seem to stop catching possums. EVERY NIGHT THE SAME PERSON APPEARS! Each morning, I release the possum. At the very least, he's eating; I just wish he didn't scare the cats away. br>UPDATE 4: Trapped and moved the colony to a neighbor's house. Within 30 minutes, I had caught a kitty. br>CAUTION: THIS CONTENT MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! Even though there is a metal square under the handle, animals can reach up through the bars and scratch you, so gloves or a bath towel are recommended.

"Redesign" that is shoddy and dangerous
3/5

Do not rely on early Amazon customer reviews of this product; it has been "redesigned," which I interpret to mean "cheapened," and has made it even riskier to release an animal than it was before. The trap you receive looks exactly like the one in the first image from the manufacturer, but not like the one in the last image, which shows a live raccoon in the cage. When mine arrived, I noticed an important part was missing, so instead of returning it to Amazon right away, I called Havahart customer service to see if they could just send me the missing part. They responded quickly, were courteous, and helpful, and informed me that I wasn't missing a part; rather, the part had been "redesigned" out of the product, and they couldn't send me a replacement. The owner's manual that comes with the current redesigned Model is for a model that no longer exists but has the same model number as the current one. As a result, the owner's manual that you receive does not accurately describe the product that you receive. br>br>The "redesigned" parts that are missing (as shown in the photo of the instruction manual) are 2 and 4, the "Door Loop" and "Door Lock Frame. " When attempting to release the captured animal, you would use this part to grip the door and lift it while simultaneously pushing back the door locking bale. It used to be used to keep your fingers safe while raising the door, which was only a two-step process at best. a two-handed operation Without this component, releasing a scared, pissed animal has become a difficult three-step process. Hands are dangerously close to the opening door during this one-handed operation. br>br>According to the manual, a "stick" (not provided) should be placed sideways under the door, through one side of the cage, and out the other side to keep the door open while the animal flees. Where do you get the fourth hand to simultaneously push a "stick" through the cage to hold the door open while you move far enough away to avoid being bitten if you need three hands to (1) lift the top latch, (2) push back the spring loaded locking lock, and (3) lift the door? br>br>In the current model, there is no substitute for the missing "loop" and "door lock frame" to grab and lift the door, so you must put your fingers UNDER the door to lift it, directly into the animal's escape path, increasing your risk of being bitten. It's clear that the owner's safety was not taken into account when the animal was released. If anything, the "redesign" aggravated what was already a shaky safety issue for the buyer. br>br>In the online Amazon reviews, take a look at the first "customer image. " It depicts a raccoon destroying the door, which still had the sheetmetal loop/lock, which is now "redesigned" out of the new model. If a raccoon could damage the former Model 1079's reinforced door back then, the new Model 1079's door, which lacks sheetmetal reinforcement, could be destroyed by the same animal now. br>br>In the last 30 years, I've owned four (4) Havahart traps and given five (5) of them away. Three of them have received five-star ratings. To give the current Model 1079 two stars, it should be noted that it is currently over-priced. to give it a rating, while ignoring the dangerously shoddy redesign This model reeks of shoddy workmanship throughout, and it appears insufficient to contain an aggressive animal on the run. You can catch a "bobcat" with this trap, according to the owner's manual. Really? It will be harmed by a large raccoon. By simply pulling the locking bale out of the containment sleeves, two raccoons working together could set the trap free. Previously, the missing part prevented this, but without it, a second raccoon would only need a few smarts to free his friend. br>br>If you have basic mechanical skills, some tools, sheetmetal, and heavy wire, you can partially overcome the animal release safety concerns by redesigning the "redesign. " To keep the top lock open while hooking a metal coat hanger through a hole in the door, use a 1/2" dowel or 1/2" x 1/2" stick. This keeps your fingers out of the way of the animal while you lift the door with one hand and push the spring back with the other. With the other, I loaded a locking bale. While you get your hands away from the trapped animal, use the same coat hanger wire to hook the door up (avoiding the "stick") while you get your hands away from the trapped animal. The light sheetmetal door, on the other hand, will not be reinforced by this fix. A large raccoon, as seen in the first customer image, can still twist the door out of shape. You could reinforce the door with a second piece of sheetmetal or plywood, but why should the customer be required to do so? br>br>It makes no difference how good a live trap is at catching an animal if it can't release it safely. The redesigned Model 1079 is not one of my favorites.
