Questions & Answers

Can you tell me the height of the red portion of the base alone? Are small dog waterers available and can they be used in place of the stroller?

Thanks for visiting! There is an inch and a quarter between the base and the lip of the red base. There is a gap of 2 inches between the water and the filling. I hope you found it helpful!

Are there reasons why the base develops small hairline cracks that cause water to leak?

My guess would be that it's a result of The product that I use myself and have been using for quite a while does not cause hairline cracks in my hair.

Recently, I bought this feeder and the water seems to drain as soon as I open it. Can anyone else relate to this issue?

As far as I know, I have not experienced You might not be able to seal it properly. Please make sure you screw it on tightly. There could also be a problem with it

Sunlight should not be allowed to touch it
5/5

The second "Little Giant" I have created. The atmosphere has changed roughly five years after two years spent in the Arizona sun and heat The 60-gallon plastic reservoir cracked and broke when the UV light ravaged it. Although it was typically filled with water, the damage was done by UV rays. In spite of the faded red base, it still looked pretty good. Despite the difficulties, the item performed extremely well in other aspects. Add water, screw on the lid/base (if there is one) and then set it aside. You might not agree with it, but it depends on your perspective Then, carry it to the coop with the red base facing up (to prevent spills). Flip it over and place it on a pedestal of your choice to elevate it about six inches High An adult hen should have a comb that measures 8 inches long. Birds will not be able to poop in the tray if you do this. Make sure the reservoir is kept in the shade unless birds are using it for a roost. You can make yourself feel better by pouring a frozen water bottle in the reservoir if you insist on coddling your children. Whether you're watering chicks or adults, this waterer will do the trick. There is no substitute for quality! There's no comparison between the little red giant with a very big name and its cheaper alternatives.

Simple as that
5/5

Easy to do. My decision about what type of waterer to buy after my chicks had come out of the "chick" stage was back and forth. I had originally considered using the watering cups or the Nipple system, but after some consideration I decided to stick with the simple approach. In fact, that is exactly what it is. A simple task. There are 9 chickens in my yard just about to start laying, and in the heat of the southern summer, they usually last a day or two depending on how humid and hot After filling the tray with water, I swish it around with my hand to make sure that all gunk and debris is removed, rinse, fill the jug again, and screw the bottom back on. Quite simple, really! The process takes only a couple minutes and there's nothing to get stopped up or break or to get the chickens accustomed to since it's very similar to what they had when they were It is stored in the chicken coop so it is not exposed to the sun. It has not yet experienced a winter (although ours are typically mild being in the South) so I cannot yet comment on it's longevity. However, so far it has been great, exactly what I wanted.

The chicken has been approved
5/5

The chicken has been approved. When we put it in the coop, the girls went straight for it and loved it. Because of the thick material used, I do not expect the girls to do any damage to the container or the area where the fill will be placed anytime In fact, the top is already scratched but no scratches were ever visible! In the red part, there is only one area for the water to escape, which keeps it from overflowing and allowing the red part to gradually fill. It is easy to fill the container and flip it over, and there is no risk of spilling water. The pros include In the fill basin, no overflow of water will occur despite being filled.
It's super easy to fill, and the top screws right There is no waste water when dirt or shavings get in the basin because, when it gets dirty, it is easy to just turn the whole apparatus over to get rid of the spoiled water, and then new water is pumped in to replace it. This material is strong and durable. In our case, our two hens last 4 months in the gallon reservoir Cleaning every other day or so is included within the 5 day period. The hens like to drink from the jug once it is filled to the brim and flipped over. I love it and I think so do our hens, you can see from the pictures that there is no risk for them to drown themselves. Each night, we move it in their house. It is a little hard to pick up with just one hand. It should be filled out and left. This is an easy and simple process.

I gave it 4 stars because the quality wasn't quite what I expected
3/5

The following is an edited version of the text from Upon exposure to the sun, it failed to hold up. In just a short period of time, the white plastic jug containing the water deteriorates. I stuck my thumb through the plastic of both of the waterers so they're both in the trash now. Tractor Supply will be my source for Some of the TS waterer I've had for 4 years now are still working well. As a result of my hunt, I ended up with these to put out next to our The last time I ordered, I had not paid attention. It does not appear that they have any kind of hook. As I planned, I was going to hang them on a Shepherd hook near the hives. It's true that Hubby can think of something, but it would be nice if he provided a hanger. In any case, they are quite lightweight, so I gave them a four out of five. Plastic that is lightweight doesn't last in the sun for more than a couple of.

This waterer is a favorite of ours
5/5

It's one of our favorites. The second time we've done this. Generally, we use it outdoors inside our coop on a stump for nighttime water if necessary and as a backup if needed during the day. It can be easily filled. A simple twist is all it takes to get it on. A clean surface is easy to maintain. I would have saved some money if we had purchased from a local farm store, but they were It is important to remember that when you buy through Amazon Prime, free delivery is not something you can count on. In the price, shipping and packaging are included, which is fine. I would have had to drive about that much to and from the store as well as the amount of time it would have taken.

I like it for a couple years, but then the cheap plastic breaks down and fractures, leaking
4/5

There are only a few here, and they are pretty tame- It must not have been freezing, nor did it have direct sunlight, nor was it However, we find that every two years, the plastic fractures and the bin becomes airtight, which means that the water leaks all the way Plastics often get brittle during the course of time. We have noticed this a few times over the years so it's not like one of them was dropped or Although I went to the trouble of replacing the silicone seal at the fracture sites, this is a very short term solution. In cases where the base fractures, you can also tape it up with aluminum tape (Yes, this is something I am familiar with). There is much to be said about the following It's simple to fill upside down in the sink, and you can stack them on top of each other upside down so you can carry two at once. It is easy to clean once you fill it up, so there are no mosquito breeding grounds. Seeing through the clear plastic that the water level is high provides confidence that the birds will have water for a while. These things work great until they.

The only downside is that it is affected by UV deterioration
4/5

I love these, but sun exposure leads to the red bottom becoming extremely brittle after a few years. The bottom parts need to be replaced and I am trying to find a source After contacting Miller Manufacturing Co. , I received a response. As I wait to hear from them, I will update this post.

This is a sturdy vessel, but the water is dirty all the time
3/5

We can certainly lift quite a bit of weight with this water jug. Our husband originally set up the chicken nipples and PVC pipe watering system, but we had to use this one while he got the system up and running. The water tray at the bottom of the jug was always gross though when it was more than half full. One of our chickens would stand on top of it every time it was more than half full. Every day we cleaned it, but it remained dirty within hours. The chickens pooped in it and threw dirt in it - next thing we knew, it looked like that again. This is gross. In the present day, it's only used as a backup watering can. Our plan is to put it up in the coop with warm water on those rare nights when we expect a hard freeze, just so we know it.
