"Defective wiring" is the title of my review.
The auger, with the bit attached, weighs around 30 pounds. Single person can easily move it. Holes larger than 8" are most likely a "two-hole" situation. If there are rocks or roots in the ground, it will require a "one-man operation."
There is no gear oil included. The gear lubricant I used was SAE 80W. It's also missing a filler cap. You must remove a bolt from the motor's side. You must turn the motor upside down, add oil where the bolt was removed, and then turn it upright to allow the oil to drain. Replace the bolt once the drip has stopped and you're ready to go. Because there is no gasket on the gear housing, the motor will leak oil when used.

If you take the auger out of the box and it won't start after a few pulls, you might have the same issue as I did. My auger wouldn't start, so I checked the wiring after exhausting all other options from customer service. I exposed the wires from the switch and motor by opening the ribbed conduit. The switch's wires were connected to each other, much to my surprise. The wires from the motor are the same way. The auger began pulling on the second pull after I connected the two red and two black wires together. Male connectors are found on both red and black wires, and female connectors are found on both red and black wires (see photo). I soldered together the red wires that had been stripped. The black wires are the same way. I had not anticipated having to troubleshoot and repair the auger in order to get it started. When I put oil in the gear case, I realized it didn't come with any because the auger leaks a lot. It does a good job drilling holes, but it has a few flaws. Did I mention the auger's manual isn't the same as the manual?.
Part of me expected it to fall apart or seize the small motor when I bought it. br>br>Woah, this thing was expensive! In less than two hours, a second person and I dug 26 holes measuring 12 inches by 30 inches deep in Colorado clay! br>The twenty-fifth: It was difficult to overcome the 1 fuel ratio until I came up with the idea of adding a 50:1 ratio. 1 gallon of the mixture to a 2 gallon jerry can br>br>First time running the motor, it took a few pulls to get it started, but it was responsive to the finger throttle. The kill switch was useful and strategically placed. For added convenience, the drill arrived fully assembled before the auger. The auger box appeared to have been through a war zone before arriving in CO, but the auger was not damaged in any way. Speaking of the auger, it appeared to be extremely light, and I assumed it would fall apart before being used for the first time; I WAS WRONG, VERY WRONG. After the ordeal I put Auger through, he's almost unscathed. br>br>I doubt anyone will be dissatisfied with this machine, but DO NOT RUN THE 12 INCH AUGER WITHOUT HELP, OR YOU WILL REGRET IT. The auger's 12 inch surface area is large enough to toss a person or clip an unattended foot. br>br>Excellent purchase; now I just need some smaller augers!.
For me, UPS charged $86. It was impossible for me to begin. Although the picture of the mixture jug on Amazon's website does not match what is in the box, the small bottle that comes with it is simple to use. The engine in the box has nothing in common with the instruction sheet. Next to the carb filter, there is an unmarked and unusable black lever that I assume is the choke. I tried the setting in every position I could think of. I experimented with both squeezing and not squeezing the throttle. At least 200 times, I yanked the cord. This was after I primed everything by squeezing the carb's plastic bulb until I saw the fuel flow through. The engine frequently snatched the pull cord from my grip, and I was never able to start it, so I returned it. That cost me $86 from my wallet. The auger arrived in a cheapo recycled cardboard box with at least one roll of shipping tape barely holding it together, which was apparently applied by FedEx. Fortunately, I had several cardboard boxes on hand, as well as a full roll of duct tape, which I used to create a returnable box.
Full disclosure: It isn't a top-notch product. tool for the shelf I used this auger to dig 155 12 inch wide by 2 foot deep holes while establishing a small orchard on my farm, and it's really, really good for the price. If you hit a large root or rock, it will jam and torque, but it did an excellent job throughout the task. It runs very well, but be aware that it is a direct drive and is much better operated by two people; if you operate it alone and hit a rock, you may be taken for a ride.
Despite the fact that the on/off switch failed after only one hour of use. The price of power is unbeatable. With the 12" auger, you'll definitely need two people; it packs a lot of punch for such a small powerhead. The unit was leaking gear oil above the gear box after six hours of intensive digging. Perhaps I went a little too far. It was completely filled. We had to shear off two auger pins, but we were eventually able to complete all of the holes. Overall, it's a capable machine that's a million times better than using post hole diggers to do the job!.
When the package was opened, it was also subjected to a quick inspection. There are a few loose screws, but this isn't a big deal. However, when inspecting the air box, you'll notice a crack in the choke arm. I haven't found anything broken yet, but I'll ask the seller about it. Now when I turned it on, it started right up and idled smoothly. What a bargain! I did a quick test by drilling a hole, and it appears that there are no problems, and the shaft also does not have a pre-spin. Overall, I'm pleased, but due to the cracked choke arm, I couldn't give it 5 stars.
