This is just a guess, but I believe it has something to do with maintaining its shape. If it's made entirely of memory foam, it'll squish down even more. It is more resistant to it because of the gel. I haven't tried the non-gel version, so I can't comment on how well it holds up.
I'm 200 pounds, and I've had mine for a little more than a year. I work from home for ten hours per day, five days per week. Every week, six days. Mine has only recently flattened and will require replacement.
The thickness is about 3 inches thick; Depending on your weight, sitting on it will increase your height by 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches. It's also a fantastic resource.
Because it is raised and puts pressure on your lower back, I don't think you could use it in bed. It has helped me relieve my sciatic pain while I'm sitting on the couch. I hope this has been of assistance.

I was looking forward to receiving this product because it had received positive feedback from over 4,000 reviewers. I had a good feeling about how much I would enjoy and benefit from the seat cushion. Because I work in an office, I spend a lot of time sitting in my chair. I was starting to experience lower back pain and sciatica issues, and after ordering this, I was disappointed because it flattened like a pancake as soon as I sat on it after only 10 minutes. It flattened to less than a half-inch instead of two inches. I can "simply" squeeze the cushion and it instantly flattens. It isn't even close to being firm. To demonstrate what it does, I've included a photo. I don't have anything to compare this product/brand to because I've never used it before, so I'm giving it a one-star rating. I notice some relief to my tailbone and like the "idea" of the space in between the cushions, but as soon as it flattens, I feel some discomfort. My office chair is giving me a good feeling.
Review is now complete: I gave it a five-star rating at first. This thing was great at first, but I've only had it for a few weeks and now, after about 4-weeks of use, it's starting to show its age. It flattens out after 5 hours of use, to the point where my back/tailbone pain returns in full force. I really wanted to like this pillow, and I did at first, but I'm returning it because the money I paid for it was not worth it. To be honest, it's better than nothing, and I'd keep it if it cost $5 or $10. However, it is not worth $30. Oh, and for the sake of comparison, I'm 5'6" and 145 pounds, so I'm not that big, but it still flattens out nicely. Others seem to think it lasts for a long time, so perhaps I just got a bad one? Who knows, but I'm just putting it out there so others are aware, because I know how much I value honest reviews (especially those that are updated after various periods of use) when purchasing items. Original Review: br>br>Original Review: br>br>Original Review: br>br>O I work at a desk for about eight hours a day. . . and my chair was starting to hurt my tailbone. . . so I ordered this and haven't had any pain since. The inside appears to be the perfect amount of firmness, and the material is soft and appears Dora bowl.
There are no other words to describe how uncomfortable this cushion is. While it does help to relieve some of the pain in my lower back, the bump and odd shape of the cushion spreads my legs and digs into my crack, which hurts. It's as if I'm always going to the restroom. I had to apply hydrocortizone cream to it because I believe I had a hemorrhoid or something similar. I tell you, it hurts! I place the cushion exactly where it should be, but it's ineffective. It's actually less painful to sit on a plain old cotton pillow.
I spend a lot of time propped up on my bum as an audiobook narrator. When your bottom goes numb, it's difficult to focus on the book you're reading. After experimenting with a variety of folded towels and foam bed pillows, I decided to try the ComfiLife pillow. OH MY. I thank you, and my listeners thank you, for allowing me to sit for hours with complete posterior comfort.
A comfiLife memory foam seat cushion was purchased about two years ago. It lasted for two years before I decided it was time to replace it with a new ComfiLife Gel cushion. Now, I'm not a light person, weighing 250 pounds, but my original cushion was firm enough to allow me to sit comfortably for longer periods of time. As soon as I sat on the new cushion, I knew it wouldn't work. It flattened out quickly and is far softer than my original, which was firm but not too soft. For one of my small children, it might work, but not for me. br>br>However, I must say that sitting on the gel was noticeably cooler. br>br>However, it's a shame that this cushion isn't up to par with my original.
I don't write many reviews because I don't have a lot of time. I try to keep mine for when I have something truly important to say. br>Recently, my mother became ill and lost a significant amount of weight. As a result, she lost a lot of her "padding," making long car rides and even sitting on our nearly new power reclining leather couch uncomfortable for "seat. " br>As a result, I purchased this cushion for her. It's had such an impact on her that she keeps it in her car and on the couch with her. I'm going to order another one in the next day or two so she has one at home and one in the car. br>I was concerned that the gel would make the seat too cold for her because she is very sensitive to temperature, but she loves it. I discover her happily passed out on the couch, something she hasn't been able to do in months. Even after she regains some of her own "padding," I expect she will continue to use this cushion.
I believe I've tried more of these types of cushions than I can recall. Apart from common quality issues, there's always the problem of finding a cushion that fits one's own tush properly - Its size and contours, as well as its firmness, play a role in this. This cushion appears to be just as well-made as the others I've owned. The gel does help to firm up the skin. Because my glutes are thin (due to age), many cushions are too firm for me, despite the fact that they work fine for others. This one has grown on me, and the gel keeps it from depressing too much under my 160-pound weight, protecting my coccyx. I tried the cushion without the gel and it flattened, putting pressure on my tailbone, so I had to return it. The contours also fit my hips and thighs' size and shape. Some cushions are a flat wedge, which works for me on more flat surfaces for a short time, but the contours of this cushion (along with the gel) make it much more comfortable for long periods of time and on a variety of surfaces. It is highly recommended.
