This 'grease' is used to connect a microprocessor to its heat-sink. To conduct heat away from the microprocessor, a sink (cooling fins) is used. Anything else would be a waste of time.

Thermal grease of good quality

It meets my needs perfectly. Use a small knife or a tiny spatula to apply it smoothly. It's also possible to use a syringe. When it gets hot for the first time or two, it emits a noticeable odor, but it dissipates quickly. If you're doing work for someone else, you'll probably want to heat cycle it to get rid of the odor, or at the very least tell them it's 'normal' so they don't think something is on fire.
