My gripes aren't limited to this printer or even the Brother line of printers. However, it still applies because it is an integral part of the printer's experience. When it comes to holding you hostage for their ridiculously overpriced consumable supplies, the corporations have gone completely insane. br>br>This has always been the case, but technology is constantly improving, and this printer is the worst yet. It will stop working after about 800 pages unless the toner is replaced with a brand new genuine Brother cartridge, which costs roughly the same as the printer. Even though it says the toner cartridge is empty, it is still full. There was a time when there were workarounds for this. However, changing the firmware or changing the toner cartridge is now nearly impossible. br>br>Previously, you could cover a small window with electrical tape and continue printing for a while, or you could use a hex editor to change the firmware to disable the automatic suspension. They've just stepped up their anti-abortion campaign. Countermeasures for consumers can be found here. br>br>I had a brand new version of this printer that I sent something to from my iPad and there was a driver problem, so it printed out 400 blank pages before telling me I was out of toner and refusing to print no matter what I did. br>br>The printers keep track of every page that passes through it, regardless of whether or not consumables are used, and force you to replace the toners, belt, drum, and fuser, regardless of their actual condition. They should be breaking the law if they don't let the user print until the quality is unacceptable to them. It should also be against the law for them to force you to use their own genuine, exorbitantly priced consumables. To prevent generic companies from producing supplies, they use patented or secret chips and resistors. br>br>They will continue to do this and make our lives miserable as long as we, the consumers, keep buying these pieces of garbage and putting up with these unfair practices. Brother used to be one of the more flexible printing companies in this area, but they are now the worst.
When I bought this printer, it wasn't immediately obvious that it didn't have auto duplex (which I believe every printer in the $300 range should have). Manual double-sided printing, on the other hand, would be acceptable if it were simple. Because the printer's color screen lacks an easy diagram to show you what to do, you must constantly switch back and forth between your computer and the printer, trying to remember the diagram your computer displayed. br>br>Once you figure out how to get it to print double-sided in the correct orientation, you'll be disappointed to learn that you can only print one page at a time. For example, if you want to print 20 copies of a brochure double-sided, you'd have to print all of them from tray 1 on one side, then feed each page one by one into the manual page feeder to print the other side OR you'd have to put EXACTLY 20 pieces of paper into It irritates me to no end.
Only a few drops of ink are included with the printer. The printer has a few minor flaws that shouldn't be expected for the price, but my rage stems from the fact that the ink supplied with the printer is only good for about 100 color prints. Maybe a hundred. Then it's time to go back to Amazon, open your wallet, and spend two-thirds of the cost of a new printer on ink less than a week after you started using the idiotic device. This printer should not be purchased. br>br>.
This is the worst printer I've ever bought, and Brother's customer service representatives are inexperienced. I've had this printer for two months and purchased it for my office, and I've had to call the customer service line twice, once a month, because it keeps telling me that it's out of toner after only 30 days of use and approximately 800-pages. 1000 pages at most, whereas each toner uses about 3000 pages, and I'm not printing pictures. br>br>I just spent an hour and 35 minutes on the phone with customer service, who informed me that they will send me a replacement toner once more. This printer was purchased with the expectation of saving money on ink, but at $73, it was not the case. 00 to replace each cartridge, and at this rate, every month, is absurd and not what was advertised when I bought this product; my home printer is an Epson, which I've had for three years and ink replacements cost $35. 00 and prints a greater number of sheets than the Brother printer. Another disadvantage is that the Brother printer does not notify you when the toner is running low. It's very unprofessional and bad for any business owner if you're in the middle of printing and it suddenly stops.
The black toner, on the other hand, claims to yield 1400 pages. We print out about 50 pages per week, for a total of 200 pages per month, nothing fancy or even toner-intensive. We purchased the printer on December 12, 2018, and this review was written on February 18, 2019 (less than two months later). We have printed approximately 400 pages, and the black toner has completely disappeared! That's about 1000 pages less than what was implied. So, for the black, we'll have to shell out $78 every two months. Color toner is 50%, so it should last another two months in theory, which would be much more reasonable. For Black, it'll cost you $78 every two months. Every four months, pay $70x3= $210 for the three colors, and once a year, pay $520 to replace the four drums at $130 each. The annual printing cost will be $1618 if you print less than 200 pages per month.
