I work in technology and have replaced a lot of nuts; the material these are made of is very high quality and helps greatly to prevent your strings from binding when installed correctly. I recently replaced a nut on a PRS SE that was made of a horrible sticky material that was difficult to cut, left sticky residue in the nut slots that had to be scraped out, and binds the strings, which is particularly bad on a tremolo equipped unit. For fun, I dropped the old nut and the Tusq nut on a table; the Tusq has a nice ring to it when dropped, but the PRS nut was dead. When adjusted with the nut files, the Tusq nut cuts easily and fixes most tuning problems; it fixed the problem I was having with the PRS; I can now use the tremolo and return to pitch; before, the old nut caused "slack storage" behind the nut, which caused the note to return sharp. Before you go out and buy new tuners, I recommend replacing the nut with one of these first. You might find that this is all you need.
This was a good substitute for a 1 3/4-inch bone nut - I couldn't find it in a size I needed. All I had to do was sand the bottom a little and glue it in place with a small amount of wood glue. If you haven't tried Tusq in bridges, saddles, or pins yet, you should. Bright and clear all of the time, but with a powerful bass - Taylor comes to mind. Because it's smoother than bone, it's also less likely to cause a strong to stick or catch while tuning.
It's what I used on a Gibson L-style guitar. I built a 00 replica, which was exactly what I required.
Graphtech has always been a pleasure to work with. It appears to produce more consistent outcomes and is simple to use. It doesn't have the same issues as plastic in terms of easily creating dents and grooves, and it has a higher ring than bone (though this isn't always a good thing; it depends on the instrument's harmonics, IMO).
This slotted nut took the place of a home-made nut. I made a bone nut without the use of any specialized tools. It was as if they were two different people. The tone is bright and ringing, with perfect string spacing.
This was purchased in exchange for a Gibson L-style guitar that I had previously purchased. I built a 00 acoustic, and the neck width at the nut is a perfect fit at 1-inch. 3/4". It was unnecessary for me to file it. It sounds fantastic. This is fantastic content. This is a great option for builders or to replace an existing nut.
