For each string, I grit sandpaper as much as necessary around it, file a number of times, and repeat until you're comfortable with the action. I applied 3000 grit sandpaper to each string and blew all the paper out. ) Nut lubrication and proper sanding technique will ensure that the strings can freely move through the nut slots, keeping you in tune and allowing you to tune with greater precision, as well as helping the instrument maintain its intonation and feel good while playing. It's critical! Also, if you file your own nut slots, make sure to file at an angle slanting down from the fretboard towards the tuners, the same angle the string will follow when strung up and tuned up to pitch (see youtube videos on filing a nut for more info), because if you file flat, you'll get buzzing, tuning instability, and it won't feel right. Put some nut lube on the bridge saddles where the strings touch, and some under the little string trees by the tuners where the strings are held down low; any point of contact with a string should be lubed for maximum tuning stability.
I wish it had been Bone instead of Micarta (synthetic), but you get two. br>It only took a little sanding off the bottom to make it flush with the neck, and a little sanding off the ends to make it flush with the neck, more for the way I like the action than normal. The factory nut groove is the perfect thickness.
I was looking for something specific, and this was it. The nut on my jazz bass broke after I changed the strings. It's as good as new now that I've put this in. It's extremely useful to know that the original Fender part will fit perfectly.
They do an excellent job of notching the nut and only require minor filing. It really works.
They could have made these to fit a Fender jazz bass instead. Both the width and the height are excessive.
