The W226 is the handle that is made of plastic. The aluminum handle is designated by the letter R126. If you prefer aluminum, look for B000H284LS on Amazon and purchase it.
I'm not sure, but I've always been told that hand washing the blade keeps it in good shape. The temper of the blades is changed by hot water in the dishwasher. My blades are still in good shape after ten years because I've always washed them by hand.
In the order that I received, there was only ONE knife. This is a good solution.

The handle becomes grittier, duller, and less enjoyable to hold or use. I still use them because they're fantastic at slicing tomatoes. I immediately ordered two of the plastic-handled versions when I saw them. They're just as good as the metal-handled ones at slicing tomatoes. The blades on both knives are excellent, but the plastic-handled knives come out of the dishwasher looking exactly the same as they did when they went in, albeit clean. These are inexpensive, but they are extremely useful and cutable. Except for the dishwasher issue, I've been very pleased with the performance of all of the Rada knives I've owned.
You won't find a better knife for slicing tomatoes with such ease and precision. Don't be put off by the fact that it looks and feels like a $5 knife when you first get it. I've never seen such lovely, even tomato slices before. From ultra-thin slices to thick, meaty ones, there's a wide range of options. The knife is simple to use and slice with. br>The only minor flaw I can think of is that the handle is quite small. I'd give this knife five stars if they just doubled the thickness of the handle to make it more like a steak knife handle. That is the only disadvantage. It measures approximately 3/8" in width.

It's great on tomatoes, as well as other fruits and vegetables. It also comes in handy for slicing bread - It's more convenient than pulling out the big bread knife, and it works just as well. Update: (From 5 to 3 stars) I purchased a second one after being so pleased with the first. Perhaps I should've waited a little longer. I was ready to overlook the tiny handle's cheap feel and appearance. The blade, however, is already coming loose in the handle after only a few months of (twice weekly) use. Wow - I've never had a knife do something like that before, even after decades of use, let alone three months. Please make an effort to improve your grip. I'd gladly pay a couple of dollars more. My Rada black-handled knives, which I prefer to the aluminum-handled versions, are unfortunately loose where the handle meets the blade. I bought two of them at the same time and had the same problem with both of them. br>br>The quality of Rada has improved significantly since I first started buying it years ago. I used to own the entire line, but I began to notice the blades rippling over time, which I had never noticed before in any of the previous models. I now purchase Victorinox, which is of far superior quality for a fraction of the price.
First and foremost, I have been a long-time user of Rada knives. I got my first ones from a craft fair vendor and had no idea where to get more. I'm overjoyed that they're now available on Amazon. Just be careful not to slice your finger as well as the tomato when using it for the first time. It's quite incisive.

Here's how you can make it sharper: On Amazon, you can purchase a Smith's conical diamond sharpener. To sharpen the peaks, use a normal stone. After that, do the valleys with the conical sharpener. It's like new! Rada's "bagel knife," by the way, is an excellent all-around knife.
