Is there any way to read the spectrum and see absorption lines in gemstones?

You are right. It should work. In addition to looking at spectra (and thus absorption lines) of neon and helium gas, I have also looked at various lasers and I am very pleased with the instrument for the price I paid. It is made in China and has inexpensive optics and adjustments, but I have found it to be quite good if you spend some time learning it and getting used to it. I am very thrilled with it for the price I paid.

Do you know where the diffraction grating is?

There is a glass prism in place of the diffraction grating on this device.

Is there any way to analyze the spectra of light emitted by different light sources, such as LED, CFL, or fluorescent light?

The tool will work, but a more cost-effective and practical solution would be a small hand-held spectroscope

Worked reasonably well for me

A bright and sharp spectrum is produced by this spectrometer, which seems to be of reasonable quality. It was not easy for me to see the sodium D doublet, so I believe the claim of 50A resolution stands. There are no coated lenses in the 16 mm optics (compared to the 32mm optics in Pasco student spectrometers). Metal parts are the majority, plastic parts are not so common, but they feel sturdy and solid. All joints are glued so there is no need for This was not an issue for me since the alignment of this one seemed to be right. In the visible spectrum, only the wavelength scale can be set, and after calibration (I did it with sodium lines), it appears to give reasonably accurate wavelengths. Despite attempts to remove reflections and stray light, there are still some visible in some parts of the spectrum that I could not remove. The views can be hindered by that.

It has outstanding performance for a Basic Spectrometer

Because it is a low-cost model compared to those available on the market, I chose it. Since I was not expecting much from the performance, I was not disappointed. The real surprise came when I used the spectrometer to look through the collimator toward the simple light bulb that uses mercury gas as a fuel. I was very impressed with how bright the spectral lines were. It appears to be correctly aligned, which indicates that the collimator slit is accurate and the aperture adjustment screw is working smoothly. My jaw dropped when I saw what you did! have a "Project Star" spectrometer which uses a grating (the same model is available through Amazon) which I have always considered to have a good spectral show. It however shows fainter lines much better than the Basic Spectrometer. Mercury, for example, is very faint in the Project Star spectrometer, but it shows up really well in the Basic spectrometer. There is no need for adjustment in this model, as the prism comes already positioned. A light is placed in front of the third tube of this spectrometer to highlight very clearly the scale when a light is placed in front of it. It is easy to read because the scale has the unit of nanometers marked every 100 units with divisions between the units. In the 400 nm range, the division number has been doubled, so that the position of the spectral lines can be read with greater precision. In total, it measures 38 centimeters Wide from the tip of the collimator tube to the tip of the telescope tube. Compared to the latter, the scale tube is shorter. In order to be able to fully view every part of the spectrum, the telescope swivels for a short arc, and has a handwheel to handle the rotation. The eyepiece of the telescope needs to be moved back and forth in the telescope until there are no blurring lines. In addition to the collimator, there is a small prism and mirror attached for "illuminating the lower half part of the slit. ". In order to adjust a manual slit widener, simply slide it to the desired position. There are two adjustments to be made Comes with two eyepieces for low and high magnification. Slit width is adjustable by a screw and height is adjusted by a manual slide just beside. There are three pages of instructions with suggestions for experiments. The instructions are fairly detailed and easy to read. Specifications of the lens (type and focal length) are stated in the instructions, as well as a directory of parts and uses of the instrument. Although I haven't tried the small prism and mirror in front of the collimator, I can imagine that they work accurately and are well made, but I cannot say for certain how they work. A flint glass prism is used as the main part of the instrument A major benefit of this type of telescope is the ability to view The last thing I would like to say is that I think this wonderful instrument would be ideal for a young person who has not yet used a standard design "G&T" In school, students are expected to follow a model of the type "G". I would recommend this book to high school students, as mentioned in the add. It would also be a good book for a person like me who is attracted to the beauty of light and the basic elements in a not too scholarly way.

A great idea, if the tubes hadn't been glued in other than their original positions

It could've been a great value, but it was glued in place and not aligned properly for every part that should've been adjustable. It was not possible to adjust the slit assembly to its correct vertical position as it was glued into place with about a 10 degree angle and the slit assembly had some rust on it.

I got it as a complement to my work with chromatography. I like it very much, but one has to be aware that having an optical bench is necessary. Also, I use a CCD camera with my computer for capture, and focusing may be a bit of an issue, but it can be overcome. The price was well worth it.
