It is well worth the effort. In testing the calibration, I use a CFL bulb that emits Mercury emission bands at approximately 436 and 536nm (far left indigo strip and central green strip). I find that these are usually within a few nanometers. According to the advertisement, it is 5nm. It has 10nm spacing between markings and the 436nm and 536nm lines can be seen at about 440 and 540nm respectively. If you find a way to decrease the size of the slot, then the spectral lines will become narrower but dimmer, one must narrow from both sides of the slot or else the line will drift off frequency. It has a kind of rough slot, but if it weren't so inexpensive, I might give it one star down. A look at the spectral lines shows that they are rough. In order to narrow the opening on both sides and make it more accurate, I will narrow the opening carefully on both sides.

*****UPDATE***** I originally stated in my review that the numbers on the scale were virtually impossible to read. In fact, they already are. As an eye care professional and someone in their 59s with corrective lenses, this is a challenge. On the other hand, my students were pleased with these spectroscopes and were easily able to read the scales. Lab results were very accurate and the lab proved to be a success. There was about an even split between these and the Project STAR spectrometers we have. When I posted the review for my students, they were intrigued We all agreed that it needed to be updated. ) These would be useful for my middle school classes, if they could be used The numbers on the scale on the scale are virtually unreadable for spectroscopy lab students at school. Scales on spectroscopes we've used in the past (from Project STAR) are excellent, allowing for easy identification. In spite of my intention to save classroom dollars with these, I will be returning and ordering the Project STAR ones instead, which can also be found.

A diffraction grating by itself is not good enough. A big plus for me was the cheap price of this spectroscope. This can be improved by cleaning up the slits where the plastic from the injection molding was stored. The next improvement was to create a narrower slit using two pieces of aluminum foil taped onto the existing slit with the straight edges of the foil used closer together than existing ones. This worked better for my daughter instead of razor blades because she was safer. I chose this product over razor blades because the size of the slit could also be altered. My next step is to carefully open it up and cover it with matte black felt or tape to prevent reflections from overlapping with the spectrum of interest. Reflections can lead to confusion since they produce extra spectrums that can overwhelm the one of importance.
