Product Description

Seawater salinity is directly read at 25°C/77 0F and no compensation is required for the condensed heat of the sea.
This device is specifically intended for use with seawater (NSW) with high ionic content
Standard Refractometers are calibrated at 15oc/59of for seawater (NSW) . This is the standard refractometer calibration for seawater.

I can't figure out what's up with this thing! This device has to be calibrated each time you use it and then you have to be extremely careful while you take your measurements
3/5

There are slight bumps in the sample that affect the calibration and even after calibrating every reading, the results are not perfect. By getting this one, I thought I was being more "top of the line", but frankly, I kinda wish I had gotten a more generic one that was cheaper because it would have worked just as well. Even so, the graduations are very nice.

No calibration will be held

My hope was that the other reviews were just crazy people stating that the unit wouldn't last for more than a few minutes after calibration. However, all of them were right on the money. It often seemed the calibration quickly faded away from the device as I would calibrate it with zero points and then test with 35 points solution and obtain the correct result. I would repeat these steps again and when I read the 35 points solution it would read 32 points. If you repeat the process, it may read accurately the second time. However, you cannot rely on this device to accurately measure salinity if the calibration has faded by the time you attempt to do so. The unit is a bad buy. Don't get it!.

When you try hard, it does work, but why would you want to pay more and work harder if you don't have to? I do not think it is worth the money
3/5

In addition to four refractometers, one digital unit and a pinpoint conductivity unit, I possess a wide assortment of measurements. In this case, if you calibrate the device with 35ppt solution and test the water immediately, it will be Many people do not take into account the fact that this is not an Automatic Temperature Compensating (ATC) unit. In the event that the aluminum surface of this device comes into contact with your skin, it raises the temperature and causes reading issues/errors. None of this should be an excuse for you to have to pay for inaccurate results when having this much money available to you. I'm sure you'd be disappointed in your fish and coral if you swung your salinity every few days. Despite being a little bit of a pain to use, it does work albeit occasionally inaccurately which could cause false readings that could harm livestock. This gets two stars as they attempted to get a better resolution visual scale which was nice and it worked. In a side note, I am using two of the cheaper refractometers I found on Amazon. The tops are black and have the ATC logo on them. Each of them is the same. I bought two sets that work ok but are missing a small piece that causes a slight variation in their readings (accuracy) that can change the readings by a few percent. Weight-wise, they are about half as heavy as a quality one, but I'm not sure I have seen that BRS's books that do not use digital technology are the best ones available. Their number is around 30, and they are very accurate and well built. Although the ones they sell look identical to the ones I got here, I decided to buy one from them since I assumed they would source the best stock for resale if there were any differences. Considering that they were about the same price as the cheap ones, I was surprised just how much better they were. In the event that you buy both, you will find the other one to be donated to a LFS. I love it.

Calibrators cannot hold calibration, not even for a few seconds. It is impossible for the Red Sea Seawater Refractometer to remain calibrated. A few examples My calibrated device gave me a reading of today. An experiment with water yielded a score of 035. As a result, I did another measurement of the same water sample 5 minutes later in the same room, at the same room temperature, and I got a reading of . However, I did not trust this refractometer with my reef tank. Around 80% of the time, this is what happens. I take around five or six readings and average the results in an attempt to improve The problem (the refractometer goes out of calibration within a few minutes) was explained to Red Sea customer support via email, to which I received this reply "Unfortunately yes, this is normal for our refractometers. ". An offset calibration can be caused by everything from a change in temperature to vibrations. She answered, "And that's all she had to say. Considering the short time between calibration and the setting of the device, it could go out within minutes. It's still a trifle hard to swallow as it adds a clause about temperature/vibration. *But, though her response might be a little hard to swallow, it does. My question has now been clarified "If there is no temperature fluctuation and no vibration, is it a normal response for the Red Sea Refractometer to need calibration every 5 to 10 minutes when it is in use?"? I have not heard back from them since then. Thus, when considering a purchase, listen to the opinion of Red Sea customer support This is a normal occurrence. Therefore, in my opinion, it is useless to use the Red Sea Refractometer. The first update of the year is here My digital refractive index testing has been made so simple and accurate because I bought a Milwaukee Digital Refractometer MA887. The Red Sea device led me to realize that my salinity in my tank was way off. Now I understand why my seahorses and corals were dying, despite the fact that my water parameters were perfect. Do yourself a favor and get a Using a button on it will give you a reliable reading that is accurate, simple and easy to use. Please note
