Is it possible to use this horizontally without sacrificing precision?

Yes. I used it on a horizontal bore mill frequently and had no problems with accuracy.

What is the shank diameter, and do you get different probes with it?

The instrument is well-made. This indicator allowed the spindle alignment process to be more efficient. There is only one set available. Tilt and centerline were required to be raised vs. two with the help of a standard indicator.
