The magnetic base is decent but probably won't impress someone used to really sturdy magnetic bases. Based on this design, the indicator will be steady enough to be positioned on almost any smooth magnetic surface. A magnet can engage the device, but one does not need to be ape-like to knock it off. This was a bonus I received with this purchase a magnetic base and a 1 inch travel dial indicator as well as a Noga style quick adjust holder. As a result of its repeatability, the indicator is exceedingly valuable to me. My four jaw chuck can now be indicated quickly.

However, I am very glad that This particular mag is impressive. The magnet is strong and the frame is clean with no burs. The arm is strong, and the lock is secure. The dial body is machined alum and does seem pretty nice, and its inclusion on the mag base is amazing. This is an affordable option that I've been very impressed with.

While I have yet to test the accuracy of the dial, the wristband and dial seem to be of good quality, so I would say that the price is reasonable.

When I perform a gear change on my truck, I buy this to check for backlash and other tolerances. A differential swap has been done on my Jeep. A good option for the price, with a good magnet / stand, and accurate data. Although I'm not a mechanic, I do all my own wrenching on my own car, and this vehicle suited my needs perfectly without going over budget. There are no instructions included, but the interface is pretty intuitive. Nothing to worry about. Adding all these tools to the collection is a great idea.
