It is not coated, as far as I can tell.
Although it does not meet "food grade" standards, you should not have any problems so long as you put it through a thorough wash in hot soapy water before using. There are no health risks associated with copper.

I used it to make two grounding mats and it worked great.
As soon as seeds emerge from soil on the ground, snails mow them down (and that usually means no flowers or plants). So, I wanted to create a fence around them. I had a bit of a problem (at least this time I had plants), so this was less than successful. During the night, I had to keep an eye on the fence for critters that would flatten copper panels. [That means I had to check the fence often and fix the gaps. Keeping the seams together without using something the snails could crawl on and use to cross the fence (along with keeping the fence upright) was the most challenging part of the job. It worked for the most part, however! It took me quite a bit of effort to fold the item.
Even others have mentioned that it comes folded and placed in a plastic bag. As a result, if your project does not require any bends at all (they mostly smoothed out, but not fully), this product will not work.
Also, the edges of the copper mesh are sharp and can cause injury to the skin, so be careful when handling it. My sincere hope is that this will help.
I use this inside of my mask and it works well.

I believe it is an actual piece of copper with a screen formed from it. It can be used for all kinds of needs.
