This hammer is effective and well-balanced, but it has the flaw that many of these hammers have. It's simple to remove the mallet portion. No more problems after I wrapped it in some sewing thread. br>br>It's honestly a good value for the money, but I can't recommend something that requires rigging to work properly.

Hard plastic is not an option. The firm but not too hard wedge is easier on my fingers when I'm assessing small animals (I usually have to place my finger over the tendon of interest and strike my finger when evaluating the biceps reflex and sciatic reflex).

I was relieved to find that the rubber on the mallet was rather soft

I was relieved to discover that the mallet's rubber was soft rather than hard and plastic-like. It would have been better if it was a little heavier, but for the price, it was adequate.

It's not too heavy. I simply toss it in my bag and it's there when I need it. I'm a labor and delivery nurse, so I use them all the time.

Great hammer; I've tried cheaper plastic hammers and they don't produce the same results as this one. The stylish color is a nice touch.
