In order to keep the tip firmly in place, there is a plastic nut, which is apparent to be Several cooling and heating cycles led to it becoming brittle and falling apart. I can no longer use it at all and have to ditch the project. I just need a replacement nut and hopefully the vendor will send me a new one, replace the unit, or refund the balance. I don't know what else to say except It's a good thing. Over the years, I used several corded Weller soldering irons until I acquired this station, which I consider to be a much more useful tool. The weight may not be as great as in the past- Although it gets the job done, it is an important duty. Each job in the book comes with every kind of tip you could ever need. As well as a relatively large spool of solder and nifty component tweezers (which I needed), it comes with a good-sized component tweeze. Even with the largest tips, it doesn't seem like it gets as hot as I would like it to, but that's my only complaint. So far, it hasn't been an issue, just that I have had to work a little slower on larger.

The only iron I've ever owned was a super cheap one from RadioShack, so I've never been very adept at using a soldering iron. Among other things, it wasn't temperature controlled, didn't come with a stand to put it on, etc. I bought this in the hopes that a better iron would help me become better at soldering, and it did! Soldering can be a very fast and delicate process if it is done right. Whenever you are worried about setting everything down when you're done, or dealing with a cord that isn't long enough, you are setting yourself up to fail. Getting a comfortable iron is essential for good soldering. As for the temperature control, it's a bummer that it doesn't tell you the temperature, but you get what you pay for, and this setup is a great bargain. There is some evidence to suggest that even on some of the more expensive units that have a temperature readout, they are not Therefore, I would recommend that you test the temperature control to see if it matches what you intend to use Check out the setting on a low setting (like two), and see if it In theory, it should be able to melt solder pretty quickly, but not automatically. Depending on the application, increase the temperature at a gradual pace. As far as I was concerned, a setting of 5 was needed most of the time for the work I was doing. It seems to be a great little unit, especially for the price. I hope it lasts a long time.

In the past, I've had to disassemble the entire iron and move about five different components each time I needed an iron at a job site, and I lost pieces each time.

I can now keep my rework station on my bench without worrying about it getting damaged. Although I wish the dial was printed with ballpark temperatures instead of just arbitrary numbers, for the job at hand it is fine. A reviewer mentioned having the same tips as their Hakko iron, but mine are different - hence the difference in price. The kit comes with a bunch more than you'll likely need, as well as solder, so every kit is different.
