Without the lid, the drum measures 25 and 3/4 inches from the inside bottom to the top of the rim. The inside bottom to the inside lid measurement is 25 inches with the lid on. Both the bottom and the lid have a slight domed shape to them.
The drum is, in fact, made of HDPE. One is being used as a compost tea maker by me. On the inside, it's a little rough; I'd prefer a smooth surface. However, it is capable of producing ten gallons of tea at once.
The inside diameter of the base is around 12 inches, and the outside diameter is around 13 inches.

This is a great heavy-duty container for storing your belongings in. I'm using it to store dog food because it's much thicker than a garbage can, so I'm hoping it will last much longer. I used to work for a company that received their transportation chains in barrels like these, so I'm confident it'll last. Another one will most likely be purchased to store charcoal. They aren not 100% air tight but sealed enough to keep water out (sprayed it with a garden hose and no water got in) all in all, definitely worth it if you need.
Because I had a limited amount of space, I placed this drum next to my 650 cfm Dust Right. Dust Right plastic elbows and seals were installed on this drum by me. The majority of sawdust and chips now fall into the drum and never make it to my vacuum. This is an excellent way to conserve space.
This is an excellent container.
