I bought this unit and then bought the hex drive shaft separately to save money. It was significantly less expensive than purchasing the other unit from any other location.
Your load will not fall because it is a worm drive. To wind AND UNWIND the cable, the handle must be turned. It also takes a lot more turning (more RPMs) than a regular gear style, which is why this style has a higher capacity. It takes a long time to wind this type by hand; I sometimes use a cordless drill to turn mine, then crank by hand when the drill can't handle it.
Thank you for contacting us. Dutton- The cable installed on the drum hub must not rub against the reel gears, so Lainson winches must be mounted in such a way. If the winch's cable rubs against the gears while in use, the winch's mounting position or angle must be adjusted to prevent this.

I've built a couple of trailers before, but never a dump. First, I bought a belt style in the hopes of making it work "wrong," but it was a lot of fun to play that strap when it was loaded; it sounded like a mouth harp. Then I came across the worm drive winch, which does not require a locking mechanism to maintain its position under load. So it was off to Harbor Freight to get their low-cost model. The winch gears were toast after one load, so I spent the money on this one with the hex drive so I could use a cordless drill to operate it. br>I'm impressed; I lubed it up and ran it up and down while carrying a 2000-pound load of mulch. With my little drill, it stays right where you put it, goes up and down smoothly and steadily, and is almost effortless. I love it so much that I bought a second one for a future project. Holy Cow, these things are amazing.
This is fantastic; with this little jem, we've finally figured out how to get the Jeep top off the floor. It's fantastic! I had no idea what a worm gear was, but it turns out that you can stop and start it whenever you want, and whatever you're hauling up will stay put instead of crashing down when you let go. I'll admit that it's slow at moving things, but putting a drill on it and letting the drill do the work really helps. That's fantastic!.
I've found this to be the best-built and most powerful manual winch I've come across. To speed up the process, I use a cordless drill with a socket.
When the worm gear drive is engaged, the handle does not spin, and the load remains in place. Because each crank revolution only brings in a small amount of cable, I added a coupling nut and stud to allow for faster retrieval with a cordless drill. Using a drill would be easier with the hex drive model. The only drawback is the method for anchoring the cable that is recommended. Because 1/4 inch cable is stiff, the crossed over cable sticks out far enough from the spool to scrape the finish off the side plate.
This winch suits my needs perfectly; the gears are well-matched, and it's well-made. This worm gear winch is slow, very slow, even when I connect my electric drill to it. You might need two batteries if you're going to use a drill and need to wind in more than about 15 feet of cable.
br>After replacing the handle with a lug nut, the cordless drill can be used to drive the lug nut.
This winch replaced a 20-year-old WG2000 that had been used to remove an 800-pound observatory roof. I'm not sure why, but this one turns more smoothly than the previous one.
Heavy-duty construction. I'll use my cordless drill to get this done. I'd make another purchase.
