It is for this reason that I bought it. It is not yet applied so I cannot comment on how it will wear, but it seems surprisingly similar to what I will replace my cats' old rope with.
My sense of smell is not chemically based, but I do not perceive any chemical odors whatsoever.
The natural refers to the color and I did not smell an odor.

I bought this rope to cover the shredded carpet on my cat's big scratching post. I liked it so much, I used it again! I think that a rope wrap is a lot less expensive The rope used in this cat furniture is of better quality than the sisal used by the original manufacturer. The right post is the one with the new 1/2 inch rope you see in the picture. Despite its new appearance, the left post still features the old sisal. It was that way before and I left it like that Here are some photos from after. I was also surprised at how fast the shipping was. This product purchase has been a very satisfactory one overall. This is a product I'd be happy to buy.

The T is comparable to some other ones. I had some Evans 3/8" rope on hand, which was exactly what I needed. With a ruler, I measured it and it was 3/8". The difference between 1/8" and 1 1/4" may not seem large, but in the case of sisal rope it is a significant difference. Comparisons between the two are impossible.
I agree that the petroleum smell is unpleasant. There is a chance that they are all affected as a result of the A short period of time. I'm glad you like it.
My intention was to decorate a flower pot with this, and it turns out nicely.
My Bengal is climbing a 12 foot bar cedar tree that I used as a climbing tree for him. As sisal sheds, there was quite a bit of shedding during the first couple of days. Since I have been using it for a few months, there is no shedding. I just have to watch my neurotic cat chew and shred.
A sisal tree repair was carried out using the sisal. I just needed a size that would work.
