Is schedule 40 piping compatible with this?

That's correct. I just put a 1 1/2" schedule 40 pipe in it to see how it would work.

What is the significance of the length string?

I found where it says that in the product description, and I believe it simply refers to the gate valve's opening's outside diameter. I'm not sure why the OD is referred to as the length string, but I'll look into it further and get back to you with a more detailed answer. Tanks are prepared. On a reef, if you're going to do a herbie siphon, This is the valve you're looking for if you're ready to start a fish tank. It was only a matter of minutes before I dialed it in.
