There are no metal parts that come into contact with the water, and I bought ten of them for my new reef tank setup. They're of good quality and have served me well in my herbie setup. Just keep in mind that these do not come with a union; however, if you want to use unions, you can purchase one from your local hardware store.
Yes, I've got one set up in the vertical position. I don't know how much pressure mine generates because it's for a fish tank, but it works fine.
No, there is no female thread in this. On both ends, it's a slip.
You should use 1 1/2" pipe for this project.

I bought two of the valves to go with my sump pump. During periods of heavy rain, I have my sump pump set up so that it can discharge in two different places, preventing either area from becoming too saturated. The first of these two values failed at the valve stem within two weeks of being installed, allowing a large amount of water to leak into the basement. Fortunately, I caught it before there was too much water, but it did leave about a foot of water in a fairly large area. A ball valve from Home Depot was used in its place. I wanted to divert the water to a secondary location three days later due to heavy rain, but the second King valve failed at the stem while I was trying to close it. This, too, had to be replaced with a ball valve, which resulted in water damage. These are CHEAPLY made and should not be used for any project that requires dependability. My entire basement would have been severely damaged if I hadn't been home when both failures occurred.
It's a waste of money as a gate valve! I not only bought one, but two, which turned out to be a huge mistake. One of them is leaking in my pool system! Within two weeks, the screw holding the part that turns the water faucet on and off rusted. It had to be replaced with one made of stainless steel. If you want a working gate valve, save your money and don't buy this one!.
When full port ball valves would not fit in a tight space, this valve is used for pool piping. It's well-made and functional.
It's not as durable as other gate valves, but at half the price, it's hard to beat. In a reef tank, it's used to drain the water.
Great gate valves that are dependable. I've used a variety of sizes and they've all worked out perfectly. Order with confidence and prepare ahead of time. In my opinion, it was money well spent, especially since they are not available at your neighborhood hardware store.
I bought two of these and one of them ended up leaking from the valve; I threw it away instead of trying to get my money back because it was already glued.
