It can be used with Schedule 40 PVC 1" and it works perfectly fine. For reference, I had two of them on the drains of my 190 gallon aquarium to create an overflow system in the shape of a bean animal. I really like how it works.
The top of the jar breaks off so that the lid can be opened. The quality of the film is terrible. The valve just broke open with no force necessary when I closed it. The seam near the handle crank just broke open with no force.

There is a delay between the closing of the valve and the valve closing It is possible for a small drip of water to come through when the cover is all the way down.
