Is this the type of connector I'd use to connect a garden hose to a 3/4-inch pvc pipe?

This isn't a garden hose attachment that you can screw on. If the hose doesn't have a fitting on the end, I suppose you could just jam it in there and secure it with a radiator hose clamp.

Will this barbed insert fit snugly into a 1" pvc pipe?

No, it's for hose or tubing that's 2 inches in diameter. A male pvc slip coupling is what you'll need.

What is the exact OD outside diameter of a 1" socket? Is it exactly one inch or is it a little bit more?

The O. It makes no difference what type of socket fitting you use. The I. is identical to the letter O. (The PVC pipe is inserted into the socket.) To see the actual dimensions of PVC pipe, search for "PVC pipe sizes." The diameter of a one-inch pipe is not the same as the diameter of a one-inch pipe.

Is that a one-inch id or one-inch od pvc socket?

3/4" pvc is 1.25 inches thick and 1.25 inches wide. 05" od

The PVC pipe fitting part was too tight

Sizing was not to PVC Fitting Standard. Without sanding, a standard male pipe fitting will not fit. In addition, the barb portion was larger than usual. By sanding (the male glued fitting) and heating the hose to fit the barb, I was able to make this fitting work. This will be used as a drain (non-electric). This fitting should not be used on any pressured line, and I strongly advise against using it.

I found the barbed end of the tubing to be too short to securely connect it to

In addition, my three-inch tubing would not fit - I guess it was another case of not knowing whether the measurements were for the 3 " inner or 3 " outer diameter. If I had the opportunity, I would return it. However, the quality is excellent.
