How Our Score Is Calculated

Product Description

This filter removes potential contaminants such as lead in tap water and contaminants such as arsenic and chloride in raw and freshwater sources such as lakes, rivers, and ponds. Berkey's product quality and performance can't be compared to any other.
LONG-LASTING - According to the manufacturer, a Black Berkey Element can last up to 6,000 gallons before replacement is required, depending on the quality of the inlet The additional pairs of Black Berkey Elements (sold separately) will reduce contaminant levels in your system by an additional 6,000 gallons before replacement is needed. There is a cost of 2 cents a gallon of water for Black Berkey Elements. Saltwater sources or softened water should not be used with these elements.
A number of independent third-party labs have tested Berkey Water Systems' water for a wide range of typical contaminants found in freshwater including tap water as well as done Extreme Testing for lead and PFCs in order to prove that Black Berkey Elements work.

Questions & Answers

What is the difference between Berkeley and ?

I've not had an Alexapure, but I've had a Berkeley for almost 20 years and would not change it for the world. The replacement filters are expensive, nearly $100 per unit, but they last for many There are five of us and three of us have children who attend

What are the chances of these working in Alexapure?

You will be able to fit them.

It's true I've been unable to determine what materials are used to make Berkey filters. I assume it would be carbon, but is that coal, wood, coconuts, Does it show up as a BL as well?

A carbon-based substance and other proprietary elements are used in the manufacture of such

If these become unusable after a certain period, how long does it take for them to become unsafe?

Filters can handle up to 3000 gallons each, or 12000 gallons total for the set of 4.

The effects of chloramine will not last longer than a month if your water contains it
3/5

Colorado Distributors supplied me with two sets of black filters for my vac. They arrived on July 12 and I installed them about a week later. In accordance with instructions, they were primed. A very good flow of water was observed for about 2 weeks, then the flow began to slow. After washing them in cold water and using a scotchbrite pad (no soap), priming them according to the instructions, and reinstalling them, I washed them under cold water again. My carpets worked all right for less than a week, then I had to clean them again. The same issue occurs again one week later (it takes 4 - 5 days) The water has to go through the filter for five hours). About 90 gallons of water can be used in a month if we use three gallons each day. Once a week should not be necessary to clean the filters. 550 gallons of wastewater are disposed of every six months (I can understand this). As for filters, which are supposed to last 6000 gallons, it's not possible I find it unacceptable that this cleaning happens every week. The water we use comes from a municipal source It is not filthy, therefore it is not dirty. Chloramine does exist in it, but the filters are supposed to get rid of it. The black filters have been used in our current residence for about 2 years, and they have had to be replaced every 6 months because cleaning involves so much time and effort. And now, only a month later? The Berkey warranty is an absolute joke on top of all that You are expected to take pictures (of what, a half-dozen things) A top tank filled with empty fuel If that were true, what would it In addition, they reserve the right to insist on video "proof". In addition, the company charges you for shipping back. The hoops I had to jump through finally got to me. My next Berkey black filter purchase will be a no go. Rather than using our current countertop, we will try one from another company. As a result, it will cost less than the Berkey and I won't have to buy bottled water as a back-up This is no longer working. The following update The Berkey representative contacted me shortly after I posted the above testimonial and let me know that I did not need to provide any photographs in this case, and if I return my filters, they will consider providing a prepaid shipping label. So, I updated my original review from one star to two after they made an effort to resolve the issue. Since these filters have consistently poor performance when exposed to chloramine, I will not bother to replace them because I will not need to go through the expense and time. An order for three 3-foot ladders has been placed Our next step will be to get a countertop system from another company and see if that works to remove chloramine.

TDS is added by these filters in addition to TDS being removed
3/5

Each batch of water is treated with one of these filters adding Total Dissolved Solids at a rate of about 30ppm Each time the water passes through the filters, it is reduced by 50 PPM. Several tests have been run with the same water having gone through my Brita pitcher type of filter every single time, and the TDS normally drops by 30 ppb every single time Each time I performed this testing I got 50 TDS PPM. I repeated this testing ten times over a month but I seem to have no explanation for it. We look forward to receiving your comments and feedback. I, Jim McCain, respect you.

The hard water makes it work for us
5/5

Our filtering system is the Big Berkey, and it has two ceramic filters and two filters inside. We replaced our filters, and this time chose the four black carbon filters. We have hard water here, so we have found that by using another filter like the Brita first, then the Berkey, we actually get drinkable water and can even use it to make a cup of coffee. We do not need a full filtering system since we are older folks and do not care to deal with large bottles.

There is no substitute for honesty
5/5

It's true that they're expensive. Are you willing to pay for consistently filtered water that is reliable and efficient? One of the things we use ours for is filtering well water that can sometimes contain high levels of iron and sulfur. With these filters, nothing is left behind, so you get to drink clean water that tastes better than ice-cold cola! They work like no other filters removing everything you want. Also, filtered water should be making your ice (at least it should be), so make sure to drink plenty of it! (

We tried cheaper once, and "paid the price. " Now we know how to get the benefit of a higher price. Bite the bullet, pay the price, and enjoy it. The taste of your coffee will never be the same!.

Berkey does not support Amazon vendors and the Berkey interface does not work with them
3/5

There is nothing we can do to reprogram the filters to prime correctly (we bought two packs). We have tried all the troubleshooting tips posted on the Internet. We've been waiting over 24 hours and the flow has not happened. The Berkey company says that they do not sell their products on Amazon, and so they will not refund or support our purchase of these filters. It would be great if someone reached out to me from this vendor so that we can continue to use our filter together.

Water with a great taste and a great priming solution
5/5

It was hard to hold the seal with our faucet, and pushing up on it to hold it could break the seal. So after plenty of attempts we used our stainless steel meat injector with a A piece of cake! This was the first set of filters we ever bought and they helped make our hard water taste so much better. It was much easier to set up than carrying around bottled water every day. We recommend them highly.

Suing the company might be in the cards

The filters I have been using have poisoned my body. A study in the NYT revealed that the filters only function for a volume of My tap water had a lot of iron deposits, I didn't realize how bad it was until I looked at it. The filters I've been using for the last two years have been filtering water for me continuously. It has been difficult for me to get well in the last few months. When I went to the doctors, they found that I had a high iron level, which is a signal As soon as I got home, I examined my Berkey and found that the top section had rust silt. I am convinced that substantial amounts of iron found their way into my drinking water even though silt didn't make it to the bottom. Now I have normal iron levels, and I feel better, since I stopped using it and started buying bottled water. This is the only thing in my life I have changed, and I have felt better since then. Even so, I'm not completely better, and I will file a lawsuit if I don't get better. Their NSF certification is not recognized and they state BS reasons for not doing so. As sad as it is, considering the price of these things you'd hope they had to at least be honest, and going by the NYT testing and article and my own experience, it appears that they aren't. If you want to save a couple hundred bucks, getting a Lifesaver Jerry Can will work. It takes longer, but it does work. In addition, if I had used the ceramic filter on tap like I did, I think it would have removed more metals, but I probably should have just gone RO if I had used it for tap.
