Questions & Answers

Our old lampholder has four wires, which we discovered when we took it out of the box. Is it possible to use 4 wires with this one?

If you're replacing a four-wire lamp holder with four one-piece solid wires, it won't work. When the screw on the two one-piece black (or white) wires is tightened, one of the wires is squeezed out. If each wire is a solid copper piece rather than stranded wire, you'll need a fixture designed for four wires.

Is it even possible to be safe in this situation? With a metal pull chain, there appears to be no place to attach a ground wire. ?

Either of the device's two connections can have a ground wire connected to it.

Is this made of porcelain and can it be used to heat a bulb?

I wouldn't consider the base suitable for a heat lamp because it's made of plastic.

The item is 18x12 inches in size, according to the description. What is the size of the socket?

Without the bulb, the socket is approximately 4 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. I'm not sure why it's 18 x 12 inches on the label.

I'm just relieved to have some light again in my closet
5/5

This inexpensive plastic fixture replaced an old porcelain fixture whose pull cord had broken in an unfixable location. Because the base unit was already in place, installation took no time at all. I'm not an expert when it comes to electrical installations, so that should tell you how simple it was (plus it didn't come with any detailed instructions). It works great because the holes were perfectly aligned.

I should have read the reviews more carefully
3/5

I read several negative reviews about "45 degree screws," but I had no idea what they were talking about because there was no explanation or pictures, so I had no idea what they were talking about, which is: The screws that hold the wires in place on ANY OTHER light fixture, light switch, outlet, or ANYTHING are either parallel to the device or perpendicular to the device; Leviton no doubt thought it was clever to put them at a 45 degree angle, thinking "hey, this is a good compromise, it's almost right no matter which way the wires come into the box," but after trying to install it, I can confidently say it is a terrible idea, and the appropriate statement is "this " Pulling the wires out far enough to slide under the screws will be difficult, and tightening the screws will be nearly impossible due to their 45-degree angle. That means you might be able to get the first screw in by rotating the fixture a little, but you'll have to rotate the fixture 90 degrees (45 45) to get to the second screw, which will stretch the first wire several inches more and allow you to reach it with a screwdriver. (Note that a photograph would be insufficient to convey this, which is probably why no photograph has been included. ) ) In other words, you'll have to push it. Meaning that the screw base will pop out of the plastic fixture and must be oriented in the exact right position or the pull chain will not move (I ended up epoxying the base back into the fixture in the correct orientation; if it had come epoxied or otherwise rigidly locked in place, I would have given it another star). At long last, it worked, but I would have gladly paid a few dollars more for "normal" screws that stuck straight back or straight sideways, but always along the same axis.

Enough is enough
5/5

I chose an Eaton brand socket at first, but had trouble wiring it up and mounting it to the ceiling box. I'd get it all wired up only to have the wires fall out as I tried to line up the sloppy-looking connectors. mounted holes were made I eventually got it installed, only for the pull mechanism to fail after only a few pulls. It was a piece of cake with these Levitron sockets. The contacts make wiring up a breeze, as they eliminate the need for tedious wire tip bending. The punchouts took about 5 minutes, and then it easily slipped over the screws, allowing me to tighten it down. I had none of the problems I had with the Eaton brand because this product is better designed. br>br>This is a good product that I would buy again if necessary.

Installing it is a piece of cake
5/5

As a replacement, I've just put it in. The old one was a ceramic Leviton, and the insides had stopped working, and the metal pullchain appeared to be electrified. I couldn't find a way to replace the innards alone, so I purchased this. It's plastic, not ceramic, as others have pointed out. For several reasons, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. To begin with, working overhead is lighter and easier. Second, overtightening the screws reduces the likelihood of shattering. (Because it's less brittle, plastic is tougher. ) Finally, if the ceramic isn't shattered during installation, the innards will outlast the ceramic. The drawback is that there will be more plastic pollution in the future. However, given the expected long lifespan, it has a negligible impact.

Not exactly what was advertised
3/5

The screws are practically next to each other, causing overlapping wires, and the screws have a grate on them to keep them from rising when you loosen them, making wrapping the coils impossible. It appears that they want you to wrap it around the inside of the grate, but it's nearly impossible to hold the fixture, insert the wire, wrap it inside that strange grate while holding it, and tighten it (all of which just kept pushing out the wire because I only have two hands and the grate won't let me wrap the coils around tightly enough). Stick with the ones that have the classic straight line design for screws, rather than this deceptively advertised product.

If it has a pull chain switch, don't buy it

I believe I will buy one that is designed for daily use. br>The pull chain on/off switch was locked in the off position after 7 times. br>And yes, you get what you pay for $$$br>My BAD.

Faulty
3/5

I didn't get it installed for a few weeks, so I used the time to come back. It was poorly constructed and would not work. While the electrician was here to install, I had to dash to Lowes and get a new one.

During the installation of the product, it was discovered to be unsafe
3/5

The electrical components fell out of the unit's white plastic part during installation. The wire attachment points sag and slide around inside the plastic framework. br>br>For a long time, Leviton has been my go-to. to brand for a long time I'll have to reconsider my decision now. or more.
