This thing will attempt to murder you right out of the box, as at least one other reviewer stated. br>It is extremely sharp, which is a good thing, but remove it from its lair with caution.
Me: I'll remove this thing with extreme caution because I already know someone else bled before me. br>The bit: If you don't pay attention, I'll take your blood in the first 15 seconds. br>After one bloody paper towel, I was able to get the thing out of its case. br>I used it the next day to cut grooves in 1/2 birch plywood and it went through without a hitch, splintering, or tear out. I've always purchased Bosch until now, and I think I'm going to switch to Freud.
This bit produces a stunning solid, clean cut. br>At the moment, it's being used to cut channels for plexiglass to hold for a set of wooden closet panels. br>I purchased a less expensive mixed set in order to figure out which parts I would actually use. The cuts were rough at best, but they did allow me to figure out which one to buy. As a result, working with this bit felt like slicing butter with a hot knife.
I'm an intermediate woodworker who has previously resorted to lower-cost straight bits only to be disappointed by poor quality and short-lived products. This is my third Freud bit, and the quality is far superior to anything else I've ever owned. No more tears or burnt edges with this bit because it cuts cleanly. I am proud to say that I will be a Freud customer for life, and that I will always look for a Freud bit first, only deviating if they do not have a product for my application.
I was given the task of making dados for 1/8" plywood to be used inside shelves and drawers. In the time it takes to get out the table saw and change the blade, I can set up an edge guide (offset for a 3/8" OD guide bushing), make several doves, and clean everything up.
I've ordered a lot of different kinds of bits, but none have ever kicked back and destroyed my projects like these have. Freud is known for their "quality" and "industrial" use bits, but I've had better luck with less expensive bits. Do not waste your money on this nonsense, and their customer service is terrible.
A total of 15' of 1/8" wide x 1/4" deep grooves were required. I ordered a set of bits with a 1/8" bit, which broke about 6" into my first cut. I ordered several of these, assuming I'd need more than one to complete the task, but I only needed one. A single bit completed the task and remains in excellent condition. The quality of the product is outstanding.
This bit broke after only two uses, when I was routing a small slot in a piece of wood that was only 1/4 inch thick. I believe this was a hoax because Freud is regarded as one of the best.
They work great right out of the box and are nice and sharp. I make more sawdust than finished product, but these carbide bits are excellent quality and hold up well in hard maple, ebony, and any other hardwood I've tried them on. I use this size for the "larger" sections of material removal and the smaller 1/16" for detail work. Both are in good condition and perform as expected.
