No, the penalty is nil. I bought a 0000 steel from Amazon, and it works great on glass, plastic, and other hard surfaces without leaving many scratches.
Steel wool around pipes is something I've never done before. I've only used it to sand with. Would spray or foam insulation be a better fit for your requirements?
When you open the bag, you'll notice that the three grades are clearly differentiated. The 0 will have a tighter wound, the 1 will have a looser wound, and the 3 will have an even looser wound. I hope this information is useful. Thanks.
If submerged in water and then set aside, it will rust quickly; most people use it dry to avoid rusting, so go ahead and do that science project.

Back in the day (circa 1970-80), In the 1980s, my even older mother scraped the dishes clean with steel wool. Those scrapers lasted for a very long time. I didn't see a replacement for one of them until the 1990s, I believe. When you're a kid, you use whatever works best for you, and it never occurs to you that things wear out and become unavailable. br>br>I had one previously, but it had deteriorated to almost nothing over the last four years, so I purchased this to replace it. For that stuck-on situation, the coarsest works just fine. the- Despite the fact that the steel wool has only been used for less than ten times, it appears that it will only last a year or two. br>br>UPDATE: br>br> MAY 28th, 2019br>This is NOT a long-term project. You may receive one of these. This was used for 3 WEEKS in a row. It will then crumble into a pile of fine rust, but before it disintegrates, it scrubs better than the rough sides of sponges or that plastic "scrub" mesh. Still not as good as the old hard metal meshes from the 1970s and 1980s, but far superior to what I've seen thus far.
Brillo steel wool pads were a staple in my house as a kid, and we'd use them on stubborn dishes. We'd just toss the pad in the mini-fridge when we were done with it. In front of the sink, there is a drawer. We'd use it again the next time we needed it because it would dry on its own. br>br>How foolish of me to assume that all steel wool is the same. IT'S NOT! br>br>According to many reviews, this steel wool is best used for DRY projects. I only got to use one of the pads ONCE, to clean a particularly stubborn plate. Even back then, the pad was splattering metal shavings across the counter. When I was finished, I dried it in a plastic cup. They're not going to be able to withstand the test of time.
I don't want to touch the poor shaved sheep from which this wool was derived, and I'm curious as to how they genetically modified it to produce steel wool. This wool has proven to be extremely effective at preventing mice from entering the house. It's not the best yarn to knit socks with for your grandmother.
br>br>To remove rust from my cast iron pans, I usually use steel wool. I prefer not to use steel wool pads that contain soap, so this is a great, low-cost alternative. I've also used it to smooth out clay before firing it, remove finish from woodwork, and clean up burnt food from my stovetop. br>br>It can be used for a variety of purposes, and the price is reasonable.

I used steel wool in the O size to refinish the top of my dining room table. It was convenient to be able to order multiple sizes in a single bag. One suggestion is to include a super fine 0000 size in the mix, or to provide a similar multi-size option. In the higher grades, grade pack is used. The steel wool was exactly what I had hoped for, and the project turned out beautifully. In the future, I would order more Red Devil products.
