The only way I can see how anyone could use this without a jig to slide it evenly across the grinding wheel would be to build a jig. A video about building such a tool rest is on YouTube, but it involves a milling machine! I simply drilled a 1/2" hole in scrap wood, and nailed another piece of wood underneath to slide across the tool rest. Of course, the diamond tip itself was accurate too. Grinding wheels were cut (dressed) quickly and cleanly with this tool. Be careful not to slip, or you will instantly gouge the diamond point in the grinding wheel.
I have tried pounding it into a pulp on steel and it stays sharp even after repeatedly beating it up.
