Questions & Answers

Is this a suitable replacement for a star wheel dresser?

That is not the case for me. I start with the star wheel and then use the diamond dresser to finish the wheel evenly across the board.

I have a 100G and a 150G Norton Premium White Aluminum Oxide grinding wheel in my collection. Is this wheel dresser compatible with these fine grit wheels?

Yes, I used mine to dress a wheel that had previously been used to shape glass lenses. I'm not sure about the grit, but it's well over 150 grams.

Can I use this on a 10" wet grinder wheel without damaging it?

I haven't tried it on a wet wheel yet. I'd say there's a good chance it's as safe as anything you can use on a wet wheel. The rotation of a wet wheel is much slower than that of a dry wheel. I've used mine on both 3450 and 1725 RPM dry grinders and it's worked flawlessly; however, make sure you use a grinder jig designed to keep the dresser moving flat and true across the face of the wheel.

Selected User Reviews For Commando Grinding Wheel Dresser with Flat Diamond Coated Surface for Truing Grinding & Deburring Wheels

Although almost too effective, there is a lack of quality control
3/5

It's a good concept in theory. It's almost too good- When you lightly press it against your grinding stone, a cloud of abrasive dust appears. It's difficult to tell if you're holding it square because it moves so quickly and with such a light touch. The diamond coating appears to be durable, even when used with the green carbide wheel I use. br>The issue is that mine came with a 1mm lump of metal stuck near one end of the working face. That lump is even coated in the same color as the rest, so I can't let it come into contact with anything else or it will carve a groove in my wheels.

It worked perfectly! This grinding wheel dresser was purchased to help me reduce the angle of a Norton aluminum oxide point
5/5

Because this was an unusual application for this tool, a company representative quickly responded to a technical question I sent after I purchased it. With the point thrown in a small drill press and the dressing tool held by hand using a small wooden block as a rest, I was able to reshape the entire conical portion of the point in less than a minute; additionally, there was no sign of wear on the tool's diamond dressing surface after completion.

Disposable, excellent performance, and a good price of $9
4/5

I made a $15 payment. It was originally priced at $9. 95, but it was reduced to $9. 50 after that. When I contacted Hartville Tool, I felt the price I paid was a little high for what I got, so they refunded me the difference (classy move, Hartville Tool). The crystals were 1/3 to 1/2 worn off after one use (two wheels on my bench grinder), making this a fairly disposable tool. That's fine by me because the grinding surfaces on the wheels are practically new now. br>br>On the diamond-coated surface of the tool, there was a section where the diamonds were lighter. In addition, a lump protruded from the grinding surface near the center. The lump sum turned out to be a boon. I wore down the lump to the rest of the diamonds on the tool by passing it back and forth across the width of the wheel's grinding surface. I was almost able to dress an entire wheel with just the lump. br>br>Overall, at $9, I would strongly recommend this. If you only need to dress a few wheels, it'll cost you $99 to do so. If you have a lot of wheels, I'd recommend investing in one of those carbon steel star wheel dressing tools ($20-$30). 40) to make a rough dressing, which you can then use to finish as needed. TIP: If you're looking for a unique way to express yourself, try using the words "innovative" and "paraphrase. " Allow the diamonds to do the work by using a light hand.

Dresser with a flat wheel
4/5

Although this product accomplishes its goal, I believe there are better options available. The main dresser body is actually a hollow square tube, as you can see if you look closely at the photos. Because the diamonds are embedded in the grinding surface, it is only as thick as the metal itself. If cost is the primary consideration, choose the cheapest version of this design; they all appear to be identical and are manufactured in China. Mine had the band name Promax on it instead of Commando, which makes no difference. I discovered that the metal on this one is already wearing away after using it gently on a very fine fifteen inch wheel, and I expect that I will only get one or two more uses out of it. A dresser with a solid carbide head and a much thicker diamond imbedded surface is a better choice if you want to spend a little more. What you pay for is usually what you get.

It's fantastic
5/5

I thought I had squandered my money when I got this tool. The item appears to be low-cost. It's easy to be fooled by a person's appearance. After a few minutes of use, I discovered that it not only trued my out of balance grinding wheels in seconds, but it also appears to have a lot of life left in it. I trued two wheels without losing efficiency, and the tool appears to be capable of handling at least a half-dozen more. All you need is very light pressure once more.

You've seen those spike-like dressing wheels that spin and don't do a good job
5/5

You know those dressing wheels that look like spikes and spin and do a poor job of reshaping the stone while doing a great job of falling apart and scattering grit all over the place? That isn't the case with the commando. If I had the option, I would give it ten stars. Granted, I had only recently received it and tested it, but I was astounded by how well it cut the grinding wheel. I don't write reviews very often, but I do read a lot, and this little tool deserved to be reviewed.

I worked, but I didn't put on any clothes
5/5

I've had bad luck with diamond sharpeners in the past, and after much internal debate, I settled on this. br>br>This is a well-made tool, with the handle made in the United States and the head part made in China. br>br>I held it up to the 60 grit vitrified aluminum grinder wheel and barely made contact with it, only allowing it to touch for a few seconds at a time, so the diamonds and bonding agent wouldn't be stressed. br>br>The job was completed in a matter of minutes, extremely quickly, with the wheel in perfect condition and all diamonds remaining on the Commando. This was a pleasant surprise considering the likelihood of failure. br>br>This is highly recommended. Grinding wheels with different grits and materials, on the other hand, may be more difficult to use on this tool.

This tool smooths out a grinding wheel in seconds and is an excellent resurfacing tool for the price
5/5

It appears to be a little small, as others have mentioned, being about the size of an old-fashioned cigarette. a traditional safety razor But it gets the job done without a hitch. It appears to be sturdy enough to last when used on a home shop grinder because it is coated with sharp small diamonds that turn the grinding wheel surface to dust upon contact.
