What are the functions of the various desity pads?

The answer is contingent on the type of surface being sanded. The softer pad is better for sanding a slightly undulating or fragile surface because it conforms to the terrain better. When the harder pad comes into contact with high spots or sharp edges, it will try to flatten everything.

Is this a 5" pad or something smaller?

A 6" pad is included. Sizes at Festool are measured in millimeters. 150 millimeters equals about 6 inches, while 125 millimeters equals about 5 inches. For 5" parts, look for the part number 125 in the part description.

I have successfully used this item, which is a great product at a high price

It appears to do what it says on the tin. This product, in my opinion, will hold up to regular use. However, based on the failure of the previous item, this item will eventually fail (or wear out). The foam center, which must flex when used, will wear out and break down over time. I give 4- Because of the item's high price, I'd give it a 5-star rating; otherwise, I'd give it a 4-star rating. stars.

Be cautious when placing your order. There are two Festool units that may be applicable depending on your sander's age. Request a check from a Festool Dealer. Because I was unaware of this, I had to send a set back. Please accept my apologies on behalf of Amazon. Returns are something I try to avoid as much as possible.
