Questions & Answers

So, what's the deal with this?

This is a grinding wheel dressing tool. Hold it against the spinning grinding wheel and use light pressure to clean out the debris that has accumulated in the grit. It also aids in the "truing up" or evening out of the surface of the grinding wheel. To keep the wheel from burning the surfaces being ground, it should be used on a regular basis. Diamonds are harder than grit, allowing for a cooler, faster, and cleaner grinding process.

Is it possible to dress (clean) a sharpening wheel with this?

It should do a great job of trueing the wheel.

I've seen complaints about a lack of life, and I'm wondering if this is due to using silcone carbide wheels. Have you only used this on ALOX wheels and had good results?

This is the only time I've used it on stone wheels. I don't have any silicon carbide wheels to test, but I imagine the life would be much shorter than it is now.

Can I use this to sharpen chainsaw wheels?

Yes, I believe you can, but I have no experience with chainsaw sharpening. However, because it is coated with an industrial diamond grit, it should be able to dress almost any commercial carbide grinding wheel.

However, it is effective
3/5

Mine had a few diamonds that protruded much further than the rest, causing the grinding wheel to groove. Because of the lack of quality control, this is one of those products that you should try to purchase locally if at all possible. I'm not sure which of the other brands is any better. To me, they all appear to have come from the same factory. br>br>As far as durability goes, I've only lightly dressed three grinding wheels. The protruding diamonds have worn down a bit and no longer leave as many grooves as they once did, but the rest of the surface is beginning to show signs of wear. It could be used for a few more salad dressings. br>br>Unfortunately, the head unscrewed itself while I was sitting on the bench and the grinder was running. Inside the head, there's a small nut that secures the handle. It's difficult to line up the nut with the hole inside the head so you can reattach the handle once it's come undone. It's a remarkably low-cost concept. I suppose it would have been too expensive to weld a threaded insert to the head.

Short review: This product is ideal for garage enthusiasts
5/5

It works, so go ahead and get one! Review of the story: br>br> br>I'm not even close to being a pro, let alone a semi-pro. pro. Okay, I'm barely a hobbyist. br>What was I getting at? Oh, yes, I think this is fantastic! I had no idea these existed until about a week ago, when I began watching a YouTube video about a bench grinder I was looking into, and he mentioned dressing the wheel. Interesting, to say the least. It appears to be very simple; I'll just order one now and be ready when I choose a grinder. It turns out that I was almost correct. The tool arrived one day later than my grinder, which is fine - I had a chance to mess around with the grinder and get it dirty. My main use so far has not been extreme, but I used my grinder to notch out an area for my quarter round to fit over our transition pieces and but up to existing quarter round, a task that would have been a bit more difficult without my trusty new grinder, to say the least. Once I was done for the day, I noticed my wheels were pretty gunked up with laminate, so what did I do? Ahh, air. I'll simply blow it out with my leaf blower. That didn't work, unfortunately - what now! Take a look at my latest dressing tool. I've seen YouTube videos on how to do this, so I'm good! They looked brand new after a couple of quick (but extremely well executed) passes! A word of caution: it does release some particles, so take precautions and wear protective gear. br>br>I was very pleased with the ease of use, and I should point out that my coat appeared to be evenly coated, unlike some I read about that had a couple of high spots; however, your results may vary.

Everything went as planned
5/5

I received this today and applied a few drops of hot glue to the nut and threads inside before using it. It came loose, according to the reviews. After that, I went over to my bench grinder's grinding wheels and ran it across both of them, and it worked perfectly. I had recently purchased some lawnmower blade sharpening stones for use in my drill and ran this across one that I had previously used, which it also cleaned up. This POWERTEC 71003 dressing tool is exactly what I needed.

sloppily put together - The grit material slid on and left a mess of uneven edges
3/5

This tool's grit was simply slapped on the end in a haphazard manner. Even if I approach the wheel with care, it leaves tracks. I'll have to purchase another from a different vendor.

Meh
3/5

It was okay, but only for two wheels. Would be great if it was only $2, but I paid nearly $11 for it. I'll admit it: I'm a complete moron. I found three of the same for $13 each. Maybe when they get to $8. They do an excellent job of cleaning the wheel. Light pressure works well, but the grit disappears after about 30 seconds. It's easier on the wheel than a spinning type, but unless you buy $30 wheels, it's just not worth it; at any price above $3 each, I can't recommend it. br>br>I'd like to add a few words to my previous review. For sharpening chisels and other tools, I bought a 120 grit aluminum oxide wheel. This dressing tool works well on very soft materials without causing a lot of grit to be lost. As a result, I'd say it's suitable for dressing a fine, soft wheel. For a medium or hard wheel, this is not a good choice.

Not a bad dresser, either
4/5

I wasn't expecting much, especially for the price, but it turned out to be quite satisfactory. The grinder's wheel was severely grooved, and despite having a single point dresser, I couldn't get it completely flat. This guy? It only took a couple of seconds to complete. The results as well as the lack of breakout on the dresser astounded me. It did grind some powder off the wheel, but it looks as good as new otherwise. I can't speak to its durability because I've only used it once, but I found this little guy to be well worth the money.

On an aluminum-coated surface, it worked perfectly
5/5

8" stone that is clogged. I got aluminum stuck in both my coarse and fine grinder wheels. After failing miserably with the silicon carbide dressing stick, I decided to risk ten dollars on this strange little gizmo before considering new wheels (or simply putting up with the clogs). br>br>This worked flawlessly. All contaminants had vanished in a matter of seconds. br>br>Warning: it's much more aggressive and produces a lot more dust than the silicon carbide stick.
