Questions & Answers

What size arbor bushings are included with this wheel? I've come across a lot of information that is contradictory. ?

Arbor bushings of 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", and 7/8" are included in each wheel.

Is this a 60 grit wheel or something else? 'Specification:' is written on the label. 60 is excellent. 'Can you tell me what that means?' ?

The one I bought has a grit of 150. The number 60 is available, but it's too rough to use with lathe tools. For rotary lawn mowers, dressing struck tools, and other similar items, 60 is a higher number.

Can anyone tell me how hard this 6 x 3/4, 150 grit stone is? Wheel hardness is measured on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the softest. ?

The hardness rating on this wheel is K.

What is the maximum revolutions per minute for this wheel?

4,140 RPM

This is an excellent wheel
4/5

Despite all of the unbalanced reviews, it was almost enough to keep me away. I purchased the 150 grit version of this wheel. I had never balanced a wheel before, so I was unaware of this possibility. The package included detailed and easy-to-follow instructions for trueing the thing up and balancing it out for a no-wobble performance. When I first put it on, it wobbled a little. However, it took ten minutes of trial and error to get it exactly right. Everything worked out fine and continues to do so. It's a simple process to get this adjusting done, and it's a good wheel, though it's too expensive for what it is now compared to what they used to be; I gave it 4 stars because the blue plastic insert is a poor design. I had to superglue the center pieces together and attach it to the wheel as well. It'll do the job, but you might want to invest in a better aftermarket universal device. This is what I recommend for your grinder in general. I use mine to grind lathe tools with a Oneway setup.

Scary soft and severely unbalanced
3/5

Before reviewing it, I wanted to put it to good use. The primary goal of my work was to sharpen High Speed Steel (HSS) lathe tools. The provided plastic bushing for my arbor was so loose that it fell out of the wheel during unpacking, which is not a good sign for something like this. br>br>I mounted it on my grinder, and the vibrations almost knocked it off the bench. I dressed the stone after clamping the grinder down and attempting to adjust the fitting on the arbor once more. Due to the large amount of material that came off this SOFT stone, I immediately generated a massive cloud of white dust. It is necessary to wear a mask. While this helped with balance, it didn't make the spinning any more accurate. br>br>At the moment, it leaves a decent edge on my tools, but because of the stone's softness, it requires frequent dressing, which I believe will reduce its lifespan to an unacceptable level. br>br>I bought a Trend diamond "stone" set to use for honing (now my razor is razor sharp!). ) and only use the grinder stone to fine-tune the shape every now and then. If you're looking to sharpen planer or chisel blades, this product isn't for you; however, if you're working with mild steel and want a nice smooth finish, this could be the product for you.

THERE WAS NO WOBBLE, AND THERE WAS VERY LITTLE DRESSING TO BE DONE
5/5

The use of a Raptor R3X bushing resulted in PERFECT results! After reading all of the negative reviews, I set out to find an answer, and I believe I have! The Raptor R3X Grinding Wheel Bushing 2 Piece Set is available from Craft Supplies USA. This is a beautifully made flange with a bushing that can be ordered to fit a 1/2" or 5/8" motor shaft. It comes in two pieces: the busing flange is all one piece, and there's another flange for the other side (which I didn't use, instead opting for the grinder's original inner flanges). The bushing is 3/4" long, but it will fit a 1" wide wheel (the wheel I ordered is 6x1x1) without issue. Because the previous owner of my 1920s grinder had used just big washers as flanges on the outside of the wheels, I ordered two of these sets. I ordered the sets first, then the Norton wheel, so that when the wheel arrived, I was ready to go. I'm really happy with it! I didn't waste any time with the supplied plastic bushings, which everyone seems to agree aren't the best, so I pulled them out and replaced them with my new Raptor bushing flange, which I mounted on the grinder. There was NO WOBBLE, as many people had claimed, and it was so perfectly round that I doubt there is even a 1/32" difference to be dressed (yes, I believe it is less). 1/64" is a possibility. WOW! I'm very happy! In terms of shipping, I ordered the wheel by itself so that it would be the only thing in the Amazon box and would not collide with other items. There was no wiggle room in the box because it was sent in a box similar to what Amazon uses to send books. It was in excellent condition when it was delivered. The Raptor R3X Grinding Wheel Bushing 2 Piece Set, in my opinion, is the solution. Yes, a good bushing costs more money, but it's well worth it to avoid the problems that come with any grinding wheel that has plastic bushings.

Metal bushings should be purchased
5/5

When I first tried to install this wheel, it was shaky and vibrated a lot. It is the bushing that is causing the problem, not the wheel. The plastic bushings threw it off balance and didn't keep it firmly attached to the shaft. Craft Supplies USA (woodturnerscatalog. com) had a metal bushing that I could use. com). 1053500001 $17 Raptor R3X Grinding Wheel Bushing 2 Piece Set 1/2"br>Raptor R3X Grinding Wheel Bushing 2 Piece Set 1/2"br>Raptor R3X Grinding Wheel Bushing 2 Piece Set 1/2"br>Raptor R3X Grinding Wheel Bushing 2 Piece Set 1/2"br> 95 1 $17. 95br>br>This was the deciding factor. I have a six-inch grinder as opposed to an eight-inch grinder. This was a blessing in disguise. I'm confident in sharpening all of my tools now.

Off-kilter and wobbly
3/5

The wheel's cheesy center adapters have been mentioned by many reviewers, and they are indeed cheesy. I figured I'd get around it by turning a precise one out of delrin on the lathe. That worked fine, but it didn't prepare me for the side wobble and the 1/8" hole that was off center. I suppose it's for a reason that adapters come with so much slop. I'm debating whether to try to true it with a diamond grinding wheel (which would be messy) or just toss it in the trash. I'm expecting a 60 grit version of the same wheel to arrive soon, so I'm not going to waste any more time. If they're both the same type of off-center wobbly wheel, I'll probably send them back together.

Good wheels, but they may require a significant amount of work to correct
3/5

The two I got were a letdown. They were both out of balance, and the arbor wasn't in the right place. I machined new bushings and flanges, but they were still worse than my factory-supplied Delta wheels, which are bolted to a workbench with two sets of hockey pucks to isolate the top and bottom of the through-bolted bench. They now perform well after I balanced them and trued up the sides and front. I expected Norton to provide better quality control; at the very least, they were inexpensive.
